MP3 titles
Last weekend I picked up a 250 GB external HDD and filled it with MP3's from my brother. It's all named and catagorized in directories already - very tidy. The only problem is none of them have decent ID3 tags - most are Unknown Artist - Untitled.
Is there a handy way to port the filenames to ID3 tags and to do so in large batches automatically?

I used MusicMatch to tag my collection and did it in chunks of 20 at a time (the 'connecting to server' kept timing out with more than 20 files). There may be others but at the end of the day, you've got to manually verify them all anyway. At work, I played around with Windows Media Player 10 and it's ID3 tagging. It wasn't that great and it actually saved the cover art as a separate friggin file!
Maintaining isn't hard, it's just that initial part that you're doing now that stinks.

Try doing some searches on "Batch ID3 Tags" over at sourceforge.net and cnet.com. I'm sure there is a free-ware utility some where that will take care of this for you.

I don't have any experience with them, but I'm actually looking for the same. I did find this on a quick search:
