Why not install governors in all vehicles to prevent them from going over 65 miles per hour? If the state was really concerned with speeding that's what they would do.
But then that would cut into all the revenue generated on speeding tickets. :)

I assume your joking since its obviously not quite that easy.
I use the slowdown where I have to technique as well and have been very successful with that (/knockonwood). And the impact of red light camera's is hard to deny. Philly had 2 of the top 10 most dangerous intersections in the country (according to some survey - no reference available) and since the camera implementation accidents have been greatly reduced. It's pretty hard to contest there effectiveness.
But traffic light camera's and speed catching camera's are hard to compare. Apples and Bowling balls..
In my opinion, Speed camera's would have the same net results as officers repeatedly using the same spot to catch people. In fact, it might even cause more speeding since more people are likely to know about it and it's more predictable. Plus you would have to guess that if a camera is in a spot, it's much less likely that an officer would be there (or nearby) also.
And than there's the Revenge factor. (putting personal scruples aside) If you knew you had a speed camera accessible by foot and had got a speeding ticket (say 6 MPH over the posted).. Wouldn't the idea of applying a little Vaseline to that camera lens or I don't know - a well placed BBShot be hard to resist? I bet the list is near endless of how they could be tampered with. Than it basically starts to backfire on the state since their repair bills skyrocket and revenue from the device is reduced to Null.
Actually, the flow of traffic is usually 75 - 80mph so it's not much of an issue. Most often, I don't even slow down - I'll drive right past them. But If I am doing a bit faster than the flow of traffic - I know the likely spots where they are parked.
No, they don't. If they are speed cameras.. they are taking picture and automatically generating ticket fines whether you are driving safely or not. Again, I never said anything about running intersections, stop signs or stop lights.Quote:
The red light cameras achieve the same thing, and as a handy side-effect, make the intersection safer for those of us that do follow the laws.
Because those laws are enforced when it's convenient for the police to raise tax revenue. (I'm not referring to "wreckless" driving with someone going 90 and diving in between lanes, etc. Nor am I referring to people who run red lights or stop signs. ) Read my above statement - the flow of traffic is regularly 75 - 80mph. That's everyone moving at that speed. Many times, I'm passed by police officers just "cruising" at above that speed and they are not chasing anyone, they do not have lights on, they are just cruising like the rest of traffic. Unless of course, they get pressure to write tickets and it's funny how they can just pick 1 out of 10 cars driving the same speed arbitrarily to write a ticket too.Quote:
I'm having a hard time understanding why you have a problem with enforcement of laws designed to keep us safe.
I love the "broke the law" phrase. I'm willing to bet you "break the law" every week while you are driving with one form of traffic violation or another.Quote:
I don't remember the exact figures, but the numbers of tickets given by the cameras in my city dropped dramatically after the first few weeks. Why? Because people started getting ticketed and either a) avoided the intersections with cameras or b) began obeying the law when at that signal. End result? When I'm going through that intersection it is less likely that someone will break the law and potentially cause an accident with me involved. I'm A-OK with that.
Actually, it's very easy on modern vehicles. Give me 10 minutes with your car, a laptop, and the software for your chip and I will govern the speed of your car to any limit you want. Most cars come with the speed governed in line with the rating of the stock tires that come with the vehicle.
I can attest to that. My ford truck WILL NOT go over 94.8 MPH....even going down hill with a wind. It accelerates great....and then you can feel the motor just cut out. I swear it even applies the brakes to keep it from going over 95.
And yes.....I live here there are no cameras.....unless those are decoy fake camera cows.
Being in the transportation industry I am very aware that the act of governoring a vehicle is quite easy and have personally done so on multiple company vehicles in the past.
Unfortunetly this will not fix 90% of traffic issue or speeding. (From my personal experience)
I haven't gotten a speeding (or other moving violation) ticket in over 16 years.
Probably because I don't exceed the "trigger" speed (cops don't generally pull you over here if you're going 10MPH or less over the speed limit.
I've seen too many cars in the trees or jammed under semi-trucks on the NJ TPK to drive like an idiot anymore.
How to avoid speeding tickets in 1 easy step:
Drive a 1990 Gold Volvo 240dl.
The reasoning is that:
1) You can't exceed the speed limit unless wind conditions and angle of attack are optimal.
or
2) If a police officer does see you speeding he will let you go because a)he feels bad for you; b)is proud that you got it going that fast; c)feels that your life is crappy enough and a ticket won't help; or d)knows that pulling you over will result in hearing screaming/crying kids
HA! That will fix everything, only sell POS cars with "baby on board" stickers, lol.
On a side note, if they do install speed limiting devices I say we all go into business removing them, because I bet those things would fly off faster than they could apply them, lol.
I miss my brick! Say what you will, but I had a 1989 Volvo 240DL (Gold as well) and I Loved that car. Put some Blizzacks on that thing and you could get through anything. The only reason I got rid of it was that some of the repairs for items that were just normally wearing out were starting to get pricey. (Ball joints, universals, suspension, etc). Have you swapped out your flame trap lately? ;)
Agreed... Corzine
