It took me a year to learn that EVERY North Carolina gas station has to remove that thingy that let's you lock the pumper in "pumping" mode. You know, that little doohickey that latches onto the bottom to keep the gas flowing while you wash your own windows? I must have looked like a moron the first time I was getting gas. As I latched (or thought I was), cleaned windshield...hmm, the backpressure must have kicked off, tank didn't fill... Re-latched, went inside to get a soda. Hmm...the tank still isn't filled. Re-latched, walk over to the wall and have a smoke.

I later learned it was some NC law on safety that those latches had to be removed. I just thought I had bad luck finding gas stations with broken ones. You REALLY miss that latch once it's gone. I never take it for granted, any more.
