Naw. I am amused at the depth of passion that NASCAR fans have for their sport. It's like a religion or something. If you look at it, I'm not even saying anything negative. To be honest, my definition was an attempt at humor. NASCAR is a borderline "sport" to me... I classify it as racing...and along with things like skiing, bobsledding, horseracing and the like, all of them require a varying degree of athletic ability, and bravery.
Why NASCAR fans should care if I call it a racing activity instead of a sport is beyond me though.
Question to Sonic - do you consider Scuba Diving a sport?

I find it interesting you automatically assume Auto Racing = NASCAR. NASCAR is one sanctioning body of many forms of autoracing. Sonic specifically mentioned he raced formula cars and never mentioned NASCAR.
I generically used "autoracing" as a sport, and in the quote, not specifying NASCAR, ARCA, CART, IRL, WRC, F1, ALMS, SCCA classification or otherwise.
If you go to Dictionary.com, the relevant definition of sport is:
sport ( P ) Pronunciation Key (spĂ´rt, sprt)
n.
1.
1. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
2. A particular form of this activity.
2. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
3. An active pastime; recreation.
RE: Nascar and other auto racing.
Whatever.
RE: The dictionary definition of sport.
It doesn't match mine. Sport at the very least should include competition, and the outcome (winner) should be clear (not subjective.)
I'm willing to give you autoracing as a sport so long as you exclude figure skating. :)

And for the record, I've always classified modern Formula 1 racing as high speed parades. ;)
First of all, I hate NASCAR. Stock car racing isn't my thing.Quote:

I don't really consider SCUBA diving a sport. To me, it's more of a recreational activity.
...and I sure as hell am not going to argue on behalf of figure skating. ;)
