anyone checking that out? i think the open beta starts soon...
I've seen it/played it a bit every year I go to the Penny-Arcade Expo. They've really been putting in the time to get it well polished - the crafting system is excellent, skill progression and level progression seems outstanding. As you gain command to larger ships, you cant just take on the world by yourself, as a group of frigitates can take you down if ya let 'em surround ya. Wind speed and directions realistically effect ship's speed and turning and must be kept in mind when planning an attack route on targets.
Last time I played it they were getting ready to impliment hand to hand ship boarding and combat, so not sure how that's turned out. Ports can be blockaded, taken over, etc.
So yeah, worth checking out when the public beta hits.
This actually looks like a lot of fun. I'd be up for checking it out come beta.
Keep me posted if anyone D/Ls it and would like a partner to get to know the game a bit better.

Same here....I thought this one looked pretty cool. If you get any information about the beta, let us know.....Thanks.
i wonder if stitch still has a fileplanet acct... they can acces the beta today
Downloading as we speak...I will post any feedback if I play today! 15 buck a quarter for Fileplanet. Been worth it just for Patch downloads.
I've got my eye on this game. Looks interesting.
Oh great I can see this game now with Clay wandering about the house saying "ARGHHHH" and stuff :)
Can't wait for yall to report back about the game.
Is this an MMORPG?
yes bribo. I finally dl'ed it all, and will report more tonight....
Looks like 4 factions in this one, British, French, Spanish and, well, Pirate.
yarrrrrrrrrrr!
ok, a quick review after some gameplay...
points:
this is a beta, and is in need of some gameplay mechanics work.
first impression, this is very WoWesque. the mission structure is almost identical.
currently, there are 2 US servers, and you can only have one faction per server. choices are pirate, british, french and spanish. from there, unless you choose pirate, you can be 1 of three 'classes', naval officer, privateer, or tradesman.
visual appeal, high. it's a very pretty game. character creation is very, very customizable. chances of any 2 level ones looking or dressing alike is slim. (except all the female toons are scantilly dressed, leading me to believe that dudes play them)
2 forms of combat:
one as a player, one as a ship. it's obvious that they have worked on the ship to ship battles most. they are entertaining and fun. they also include boarding, leading to 'people' battles. kill the captain, win the battle. winning battles allows you to upgrade equipment.
the 'people' combat content is clunky and slower than WoW, but it is different in that you have true defensive moves in your skills e.g. parry.
you fight NPCs and pvp, i haven't come across a pvp fight yet.
the UI needs refinement. i'm not sure if it's customizable, but it looks like the standard blizzard wow interface.
overall, this game has a lot of potential, imagine the huge naval battles of a 12 ship AK flotilla....out on a PvP bender.
unless you love pirates, wait for the true open beta, otherwise, do what i did, i ponied up 6 dollars for a fileplanet membership, dl'ed the game, and will cancel the fp sub next week.
overall this would be entertaining if we get a core 10 people to play, i think this would be tough solo.
game client is over 5GB. dl overnight, then patch updates are another hour...
queues exist during peak times. a logout to change toons, puts you back in queue.
I think I will wait until its truly an open beta and doesn't require filenazi to get it. Sounds interesting though.
Submitted for open Beta. Sounds like good times!
Thanks for the good review/summary Chooz!
I can't really blame them for stealing whatever they can from WoW. Figure, why reinvent the wheel when the last wheel is soo successful.
Have you seen anything as far as the economy goes?
--edit-- I found the description and based on it, I assume it will take a little time to develop. I like how they are indeed involving auction house and serious crafting. Plus, since their is no level restrictions in that arena, it'll allow people who really like the economics more then battle to thrive (similar to EQ2).
BTW -- If we do have enough people interested in giving the release a whirl, perhaps we could investigate the Pre-order.

Digital Pre-Order Benefits Include:
*
Pre-Boarding Party -Set sail up to 15 days prior to the commercial release of the game
*
Keep your characters, equipment and skills after launch (level cap of 20)
i'll assume his cleavage requirements will be met

This looks interesting but I'm wondering about the longevity of a game based on this genre.
My beta download just set sail. Which server you on Chooz?
For folks looking for more info:

Another review. - I particularly enjoyed, "The game's extensive economy system needs more time to develop, as more beta players sign up and contribute to trade and manufacturing, but it will become a critical component, since almost all the game's ships and building materials will be user generated. In the meantime, players choose when to stay or flee from confrontations, since losing a battle also means losing all the loot inside the ship's hold. No doubt, big money can be found in escorting merchant ships and protecting them from danger."
And for Squidly :pimp:

I have multiple toons, let me know what server you are on, and what faction :)
I can start over if needed as I really haven't done much.
Anyone who's been looking forward to checking this game out, the Open Open Beta has started. I believe it'll last about a week, but the only thing the dev's have said is "around Christmas" so who knows..

Forum Thread about above link.
I'm going to try and get my review up here sometime today, but I've already pre-ordered it. I'm definitely liking it and though some of the appearances and such are similar to WoW, the rest of it is Not WoW IMO. And what a nice change of pace. Full review to come..
WoW is now the gold standard of MMORPGs. My brother-in-law was showing me Lord of the Rings Online. The graphics were better but everything else from game mechanics, combat, gear, quests, etc. was a total rip-off of WoW.
I am downloading today please let me know what faction and server.
downloading as well
I'm on Rackham (edit)
Spanish
- FreeTrader (FT) - level 9 - Oz Red
- Naval Officer (NO) - Level 9 - ThreSheets ToDaWind
still working on my review.. been an exciting day at work.. yippy.
Also, I expect I'll be on tonight when I get back from the gym (not sure what time) but I'll be on Vent to help explain what I know and what I think I know.
My Pirates of the Burning Sea Review
- First impression, What it is and is not, and Potential.
- Please note I’m bulleting this so that it’s easier to read, most of my points could be expanded on by request
First Impressions
- Has all of the common denominators of an MMORPG. Lots of people, factions, PvP, economy, general chat, grouping, a crafting system, etc.
- They have indeed used a few ideas from other MMORPG’s that have worked well and become something of a standard. And some of those very things have been molded to fit into the general flow / design of this specific game. (the Auction house (AH) is a great example)
- Battles (especially ship battles) are much less static and feel more like a real-time strategy game – In My Opinion. Keeping track of the basics (wind, current, distance, vulnerabilities, etc) is much different then your typical Fantasy based RPGs.
- All of the quests and battles are instanced, as well; you can upgrade the difficulty levels by a factor of 5 based on your skill level, confidence, etc.
PVP
- PVP will ultimately be several things and most importantly it’ll be meaningful.
- There is a “Conquest System” which will be used for nations (factions) to wage war against one an other for the purpose of capturing a specific port. (reason for doing so is in the economic review)
- And PvP has Risk and Reward.. Ships and Loot. If you win, you win your opponents loot and they loose their ship. If you play a pirate, you can capture that ship and sell it on the AH or save it for after a future lose.
Economy – (my favorite aspect of MMO’s)
- There is no crafting system as your use to from other games. It is replaced by a Production system.
- Players will have a limited amount of structure allotments which are used for produce goods; either materials or finished products depending on the type of building.
- There are a whole lot of things that are produced and “production lines” will come into play to compile the materials for final products.
- Different types of materials are only available at specific ports (thus how the conquest system will come into play), so if you are producing something you can either sell it at that port’s local AH or transport it to another port for sale OR for use in other production lines.
What it Is and What is Not
- IS – a new MMO that has a great concept, lots of potential, and room for improvement
- IS NOT – WoW… It’s not 3 years old with 3 years of fine tuning, expansion, documentation, and player base.
- IS – Fun and Challenging. Adapting to a very different combat system takes some getting use to. And since it’s new, you have to actually learn some stuff for yourself instead of just reading other people’s “How-To’s”. Obviously this won’t last forever but for folks willing to jump right in, that challenge should be fun.
- IS NOT – Hard to learn.. Like I said above, it just takes some getting use to.
- IS – Based of the life of mariners in the late 1700s. You can visit Havana, Tampa, and Cuba. You are the mercy of the wind, and you will have to defend yourself if you really wish to seek treasures off of the beaten path.
- IS NOT – Medieval Fantasy – No Magic, no Dragons (that I’ve seen)
- I could expand this I’m sure, but I’m hoping you check it out and find out for yourselves.
Potential
I see all kinds of potential for this game. I’m just hoping that FLS (Flying Lab Studios, Creator) and SOE (Sony Online Entertainment, Distributor) see it as well. With the way resources are dispersed, we can rest assure that their will be some very contentious ports to be fought over. There is bound to be an in-game political scene which will shape other aspects of the game. I know they’ve already begun to work on how to keep national balances for under-dog nations (lower populations). I’d also imagine that the sea will expand with time as well. All in all the map isn’t too large, so expansion seems inevitable. But hey, isn’t that what happened anyway?!?!
Any questions or requests for more details just let me know and I’ll do my best to answer.
Well, I hope that helps and I look forward to sailing with you soon.
Where? I've been looking all over for the free client, and can't find it. I'll give it a whirl if I can find the dl. =)
Nevermind - found it, I just have to wait in line for 30 minutes. =(

Looks kind of freakish/scary...
Download the Beta HERE!
Yes, I found that. I am now patiently waiting the 5 hours it will take to download. Maybe tomorrow night. :nuh:
Download invaild.........great well Ill try again tomorrow
YUK! :eek3:
Word of advice about the installation. After it's decompressed, installed, and you attempt to connect; you'll start to download all the latest patches. You MAY run into an issue where it'll "Cancel" the download and just stop. Hit "Full Scan" and you should be able to get around it.
When I was installing, I ran into that problem twice on my first attempt. Neither time did the full scan work. So I uninstalled, and re-installed to a different folder, got the same stoppage again, hit "Full Scan" and whalla 10 minutes later I was creating my Avatar.
Good Luck and hope to see you in game soon.
Wake me when the Fallout MMORPG launches.
Ditto. I am there for Fallout. See you in 2010. ;)
