Anyone playing tonight? I'm signing up for another free trial.
You should play DOOM3
Soon. Very soon.
Fax,
I'm "porter" in game.
Tune channel 31 as axis, that's Windhund's channel. Tell them you know me (if I'm not on)
Doom gives you 3 opponents, WWIIOL gives you 3,000 :)
Has it changed in 2 months? I graphic's and models were still pretty poor. Also they hadn;t fixed the ride for 15mins and Die and drive another 15mins to die again!
keep in mind, it's NOT a FPS. It's a simulation. So, just like RL, you can die w/ one bullet, and not know where it came from. Teamwork wins.
With this free trial, my in game name is "hellbent". I'll look for you.
So, no changes!
Fax, I'll be hard to find if you keep playing French and British. :)

Can we get a WWIIOL Forum? I'd probably be talking to myself most of the time....
so what is new? You just need to listen to yourself. Miss you here at the bank.
What's new....
Anti-Tank Rifles for infantry. Deadly on light, damaging to medium, and annoying to heavy tanks.
Visible damage models. Now when I shoot the Hurris, spits, havocs, blens and d520's out of the sky, I see where my 28mm HE round hit their plane. They catch fire, they blow apart, they explode in mid air. You can see a wing fall off, and the plane careens to the ground. Hit a stabilizer and watch them spin. Using a FlaK28 at a forward base to kill planes is my forte(like Ages with the SA-7 or Stinger). FB defense can be boring, but I'm not much of a Marksman with the rifles. The Luftwaffe asked me to stop wasting planes too. If I do spawn infantry, it's to defend our armor from sappers, or to participate in a building to building battle in a contested city.
Remember, the graphics were sacrificed for the sake of a really big map with no zones. Therefore, you can run an HE-111 bombing mission with BF109 escorts to the factories in Britian, AND affect their production, research and development schedule. Or die trying because of the RAF. And you do all of this without zones or warp points.
In the works;
--bridges will be destroyable by bombs and sappers, and will be repaired by engineers.
--brigade spawning, the brigade that your squad is assigned to will have a cap on equipment, so choose your unit wisely, and treat it well.
--more vehicles, more infantry types, more towns, more players.
I've been compiling stats on the player base, and WWIIOL is up to 87,000 unique players. Of course, part II is to calculate the number of active players, each players enlistment date, so on and so on.
What makes it different?
The maturity level of the playerbase. Asshats are few and far between.
This game isn't catered to the classic FPS type, but the war sim enthusiast. Yes, you still have the opel rides to action, yes you still get shot out of nowhere. The learning curve to the game is large, but everyone is willing to help so that the playerbase grows.
I will try again sometime in the future. Map is still hanging in my home office
yeah, I need to print one out. maybe you could use one of your plotters to do it?
pretty please?
How much does it cost per month? This has always sounded intriguing to me. I've been adamantly anti-pay-per-play, but if there's a free trial and it's reasonable, my circumstances have changed enough to make me reconsider for one really, really good game.
Yeah, and Everquest is neither really really good, or worth it anymore..
WW2OL always intrigued my interest too.. but I never really researched it.
I'm enjoying myself. I'm playing as the allies this time around, since my last free trial was spent playing for the Huns. I'm very impressed how helpful everyone is in the game. Class acts all around. I'm more than likely going to purchase a full account at the end of my trial, but I'll see how it goes. I'm still learning the ropes, as the learning curve is high. It's coming back to me from last time that I had a free trial.
If you are going to play allies, then I'll see you on the battlefield.
Think of me merely as a German spy. I'll enlist with the Germans when I sign up for my next free trial, or after I buy an account, whichever comes first.
I'll play alllies to get you up to speed if you'd like. you'll be my grasshopper. :)
Rocks .. how do you feel about that map? :)
I'm going to jump on and play axis tonight if you're going to be around Chooz. I have a few questions.
I'll make it a point to be on. Probably around 10PM EDT. Tune channel 31 and tell them you know me "porter", they'll help you out too. good group of guys (and 2 girls)
I'll hop on Ventrilo.
Fax, BTW, I killed that grenadier that got you.
Let me know when you will be on again...
Righto. I'll be back in town Sunday. I'll probably jump on in the evening. I need to tune my game sound. It's impossible to hear ventrilo especially while inside a vehicle.
Where about are you going to be up here this weekend? The Desmond?
I'm rolling into Castleton tonight around 9 or 10. My fiance and some friends are probably going to go into Albany for some nightlife. Then on Saturday, I've got a wedding to go to, but that's wrapping up around five. Depending on how things go, I may stay another night, or just head back home.
Where/what is the Desmond?
Big hotel. I thought you were going to be staying in Smalbany
I'm hopping in game now to try and earn some promotion points.
Castleton? That's like 10 minutes from my house. I just got back from the lake where Squidly and I consumed much beer and smoked many cigars. :smokin
It's a very nice and scenic area. The wedding I went to was at River Stone Manor on the Hudson, which was quite nice as well. The drive up and back was a bit of a drag, however.
Fax,
Care to give a review of the game? Perhaps we can drag in one or two more.
I was planning on posting my thoughts. I'll do that soon.
After the expiration of my 14 day free trial, I've decided to sign up for a subscription. The gameplay has thoroughly impressed me, and has been improved since the last time I had a free trial, nearly a year ago. The addition of anti-tank rifles, and rifle grenades for infantry stand out. Also, airplanes now show specific damage from anti-aircraft guns. The other night I saw a Junkers split in two by AA and fall to earth in fiery pieces.
The game is not like any other I have played before, and is a huge departure from normal FPS games. The gameplay is difficult to describe. While set in a first person mode, the action plays almost like a cross between an RTS and a simulation. Simulation aspects become readily apparent when you're driving vehicles, notably tanks. They are complex to master, and are appropriately detailed in the way they drive and handle, all the way down to the gears and hatch controls. Flying seems most complex of all, and I have yet to give it a serious try. Likewise, I haven't set foot on a ship yet either. WW2OL lets you play out many aspects, from the humble foot soldier, to the heaviest artillery. I find it to be challenging and replayable. Every battle lets you try a different aspect of the real time war. The learning curve is steep and intimidating, but the payoff is a big one. Still, the game requires a good deal of patience, and may not be for everyone. Listening, and discerning when to stay still and when to move are key elements. The good news is, patience is often rewarded with battles that can rage on for hours.
While the learning curve is steep, the community is stupendous at helping noobs. I was offered help at least a dozen times by different people in game when I first began playing. I was very impressed. The folks playing are more than likely hardcore, long time fans of the game, and almost every operation involves vast amounts of strategy and teamwork.
The game does have its downsides, however. Graphics are out of date. While it's no Doom, it's certainly no Doom 3 either. Vehicles and infantry models are well done, but the terrain is blocky, chunky and 2d. The terrain can't be too detailed though, because there's so much of it. There's so much brush and trees in the game that can be seen for miles, without slowing the game down at all. The graphics take a hit for increased performance and gameplay---and that's fine with me.
In closing, I'd recommend this game to those of you gamers who love strategy games, and simulations with a wide variety of roles to play. People who are content to wait for a huge payoff in action will find WW2OL gratifying. I would not recommend this game for people who have little patience, or crave a game with constant action, or people who are intimidated by a large learning curve.
Many thanks to Choozoo for his mentoring, and great recommendation in this often overlooked gaming hit!
