Commissioner's Early Notes

It's getting closer to that time of year and I thought I'd make a post to get some discussion started on where we left off last year in terms of collecting franchise fees in order to offer some prize money.

I know things may be a little tighter this year than last, so I thought I would take a status report on who would be interested in a franchise fee of $25.00 which would go towards a prize fund? I think we'll probably stick with Yahoo!, but I will also look around just in case something looks interesting.

Hey Everyone, Considering I'm currently out of any FFL, let me know if you have spot open up and are open for a non-[AK] entry. I promise to keep my roster up to date, and am fine with whatever is decided on as far as competitive fees / buy-ins.

You are added to the list - so we stand at 7 right now. I think we are looking at $25 buy in toward the prize fund. Although I highly suggest people spend $9.99 on the stat tracker - it rocks. I'll be setting this up in the next few weeks.

But if it's a chance to beat Camel, Osred, Bribo, Beast etc... and the like.......

I would like to take a stab at it if you have room, I know yall have "regulars" though so if there is no room I'm cool with that too.

This is slightly off the topic of the thread, but FFL has always kinda fascinated yet utterly confused me. How exactly does it work? I've done a lot of pots for different sports where you predict the winners for each game and whoever has the most at the end of the season wins some cash, but I can tell this is quite different.

Anyone up for giving me a quick and dirty summary?

Sure! We get together in what amounts to a Yahoo chat room at a set time (Ventrilo optional, but makes for more fun with verbal trash talk) and draft a roster of NFL players. Then when the season starts, you put together your starting lineup for that week based on how you think the players will do (you have a set number of players at each position, and a "bench" of players whose stats don't count for that week). You get points based on your players' individual stats for that week. (Yards = points, TDs = more points, QBs throwing INTs = negative points. There are other categories but those are the biggies.) Each week, you're matched up against another team in the league. Highest score in each fantasy "game" wins. At the end of the season, the top few teams compete in the playoffs (during the last few weeks of the regular season.) Standard single-elimination format--win or go home. Winner takes all!

Hrm, sounds interesting. Too bad you don't do it for college, I'd jump on that! :)

Now can more than one person pick the same player?

I don't mind sharing a team with someone if more people want to play.

I know Osred and I talked about a combined team (Owner-GM type thing :)) if we get more people interested than we have slots.

I am also open to other collaborations, I just think having a team makes watching football more fun.

Oh and trash talking! Gotta have the trash talk!

I'll double check - but I think we could go to 12 or more teams if we want. It gets kind of thin if you get too many teams - but I think 12 would be OK. I'll double check though if necessary.

Nope--once they're gone, they're gone.

Typically, the running back is the first-drafted position (A few exceptions, such as Brady and Manning, do exist). But as more teams go toward RB-by-committee, it'll be interesting to see if that trend continues.

I've been in some 12-team leagues that have been a lot of fun. I've been through some 14-team leagues where you're scraping the bottom of the barrel when guys get hurt/have bye weeks.

So how do you decide who gets to pick first? Do you pick a new roster every single week or do you pick at the beginning of the season?

Whole-heartedly agree. Kind of gives you a reason to pay attention to games outside of your home or favorite teams.

Season, then you go from there. Add/Drop players based on performance and health. And of course the art of trading.. :beer:

Draft order is usually determined at random, though another league I'm in that has a fairly consistent roster of owners does the draft order just like the big boys--based on inverse order of last year's finish (with "expansion" teams picking dead last).

You can share with me or I can team with Osred. I don't care I just like having a team to follow and it's more fun to participate. I don't mind doubling up, after all if 2 people are picking favorites you have a better chance of at least one of them being semi-right ;).

Same goes for Fight Club.

Or we can have 12 teams that's up to the people who put these things together to decide though. I'm not sure how many teams a league generally supports. I leave that up to the experts.

You're good FC! That gives us 12. I think we are full but if there is any other interest - we can discuss.

BTW - Yahoo offers Keeper leagues for FREE. Is anyone interested in this "franchise" mode? I'm in another league where we have this (There is also a $300 buy in every year) and I love the aspect of 'protecting' a certain number of players each season.

For $125.00 we could get the "Plus" league for up to 20 teams. If we had 20 teams x $25 = $500. Could pay for it plus $375 into price pool. $300 for SB winner. $75 for loser. Just throwing that out there - not necessarily a recommendation, just a "FYI" to discuss if interested. ;)

I'd recommend keeping this as low cost as possible.

OK - So Camel has just agreed to pay the $124.99 league fee and all teams entry fees.

I would prefer keeping the costs as low as possible as well.. I also think that part of the fun every year is starting from scratch... So I like things the way they are... :)
