Enemy at the Gates
Caught it on HBO this evening and all I could think of was getting my No 4 Sniper and camping out in a building on the Stalingrad map. Crazy how well the game captures the essence of the movie, which in turn really seems to capture the essence of the struggle for Stalingrad in 42-43. Anyway, if you haven't seen it, do so! It's a pretty cool movie. :)

Another really good movie is 'Stalingrad'. It is a German movie, but you should be able to find it at Blockbuster. I find it to be a better movie than Enemy at the Gates. It just doesn't seem so "Hollywood". So, if you like Enemy at the Gates, you will probably really enjoy 'Stalingrad'.

Hollywood movies are EVIL! EVIL! EVIIIIIIILLLLLLL! LONG LIVE STUDIO GHIBLI!
Seriously though, I can't wait to see Spirited Away. Princess Mononoke was my favorite film of all time, and Spirted Away is supposed to be amazing too.

I'll second the recommendation for Enemy at the Gates. It's a great movie: Good combat sequences, good sniping duels, and a really solid message at the end about why communism can never work.

I third. I loved this movie.
-
The love story ruined it for me.
-
-
The fact that the dirty sex scene in this movie topped American Pie's "Pie Sex" scene as dirtiest sex scene of all time ruined it for me.

On the plus side, my wife jumped my bones after watching the sex scene in that movie.

Sex in battlefield conditions hardly seems worse than sex with a pie.
I thought the love story was the best part, because of the political overtones. A lot of people missed it, but right at the end the propaganda officer realizes that the love triangle has driven him to do bad things to the hero. I forget the details. Just before he sacrifices himself, he realizes that if two men can't share one woman, then there's no chance for millions of Russians to share everything under communism. Human nature conquers all.

enemy at the gates was based on a true story.
now, read carefully: the movie was based on a true story. meaning it is not a true story, or it is not 100% accurate.
i remember reading about the real story that enemy at the gates was based upon, and never in the discussion of that story was a mention of the love subplot that appeared in the movie.

What does sex and love have to do with one another??
ROFLMAO

If you watch the dvd, the excerpts that were not included in the final cut are quite interesting as well. My favorite is when Kruschev is blasting Stalin for being "superstitious like an old woman"

This was a good movie. Watching it prompted me to read both "Enemy at the Gates" and another more modern book the title of which I cannot remember (it did have Stalingrad in it).
Points both books mention.
1 - There was a female sniper that our hero did fall in love with. She eventually got hit by artillery while on patrol with another female sniper referred to as "The Cow".
2 - Zaitsev was hit somehow somewhere and he and the female sniper didn't see each other again, at least not during the war, and did not have any close attachement to each other ever again. (I forget the details).
3 - No mention is ever made of our Political Officer Friend.
4 - The boy who is killed in the movie in real life was a teenager, and no mention of him ever being used as bait.
5 - Gotta love the cockney accent of the russian boy...
Enemy at the Gates is a very good book about the whole battle, Our sniper friend only warrants a couple paragraphs.

I second the superiority of "Stalingrad." But Enemy at the Gates was a lot of fun, not knocking it one bit. :)

I expect creative liberties to be taken with any film made in hollywood. To say it is not historicaly accurate will always go without saying. If it was astep by step account of actual events it would be a documentary. Not that those are any better in many cases.
I enjoyed the film all in all, even though the end was ruined for me by my father who spilled the beans frame by ever loving frame. Thanks Dad.
