So ... WTF?
She's an outsider and more 'average' than other politicians. That being said... she's a bit naive, lacks experience, and so far really hasn't made any profound comments that persuade me that she's a viable candidate.
"In an extraordinary four-page letter, Alaska-based attorney Thomas Van Flein warns of severe consequences should speculation that until now has largely been confined to blogs — about whether Palin embezzled funds in the construction of a Wasilla, Alaska, sports arena — find its way into print."
http://www.politico.com/news/stories...xzz0KS0Xp3UQ&D
Maybe this is why?
Whether or not this was a wise move presupposes insider knowledge which none of us (including the press) has.
As far as I've been able to dig the Wasilla Sports complex issue has been dealt with and there are no further investigations being done into it...
Based on the letter she put out on the 4th it seems as though she is gearing up for 2012.
There was a lot of trimming down there SB. ;)
Having spent this past weekend in Alaska and being there as the news broke, I can give you the general consensus from the hardest-core, FOX news 24/7 fisherman bar in Sitka.
It's a bad move if she has presidential aspirations. Nobody likes a quitter.
It's a good move (for Sarah Palin) if the heat was too much for her to handle and she, metaphorically, likes to eat the ice cream but not the vegetables. My guess is that she's going to take the money and go be the rock star of Republican fundraising without having to make all those pesky executive decisions.
The general view from the Pioneer Bar (a place filled with even more right-wing true-believers than AK) is that, short of some sort of debilitating health issue, any way you slice it hers is a dereliction of duty, pure and simple.
BTW, here's a photo from the top of Harbor Mountain last Sunday. An epic weekend. :)

To give you an idea of scale, that's the airport runway at the treeline.
I don't see the photo :(
Personally I see her as making the correct decision for the state of Alaska. It'll allow the political leaders there focus on the state/spend money on the state and not on frivolous ethics violation lawsuits brought up by various people/organizations.
Here's a decent article on the topic, from CNN of all places.
So you prefer dirty political insiders that owe their political existence to others like them? A governor of the largest state in the union with the most resources does NOT lack experience!
What? Attempting to serve in the governor's chair while leftist political action groups; possibly Acorn create a storm of frivolous lawsuits for the sole purpose of besmirching her character and costing her, her family, and the state a ton of money? They are scared to death of her and want her to shutup and disappear. Unfortunately it is the right move for her to cause them to believe they have won and destroyed her. I believe she has an eye on the future. We will see...
Purely local barroom meaningless gossip. I can't take drunks and barflies serious. Finally! Someone with a sensible and logical viewpoint! Thank you! I can't characterize myself with Sarah Palin, but we have similar viewpoints coming from two different states with one having the largest public land and the other having the second largest public land. People of these states have far different viewpoints than big city people. If I were stuck in the Alaskan outback, who would I want to have with me, Sarah Palin or some big city slicker? That is a no brainer!
What I do like about her: She is just a regular straight talking lady that can cook, clean, take care of kids, talk at the same time, and serve a large state in the highest office with integrity and honesty, and never claims to have attained perfection. She is not an academia intellectual political insider which makes her all that much more of a viable and regular person to me. /Salute
Largest state (size) is very different that largest state (population).
And being governor of any state for 2 years does not give you experience. I'm not saying that she should serve for 30 years in various government jobs and elected positions, but I'd like a presidential candidate to be a bit more well-rounded.
As far as 'most resources'... what's your source?
I'd like a president that is a bit more well rounded... too bad the majority of people are all dopes and voted on emotion.
Yep! So they think or say, "Why should I vote for some some hick jabber box woman from a no where state and what resources could they possibly have?"
They voted for O'bama! What more do you need to know? People voted for O'bama, not because he was an executive experienced candidate, but only because he is black and they are black or white apologists. I would have no problem voting for a black hardcore conservative with executive experience and that would apply equally to a woman with those qualities regardless of what color she might be. Could it be that some of those dumb voters figured that his name sounded like a good Irish name considering the mythical belief that Irish dark hair was a direct result of shipwrecked Portuguese sailors?
Don't blame me. I voted for the grumpy, old guy. :)
And I think that Sarah Palin is well-rounded in all the right places.
I wouldn't say all the people that voted for Obama are apologists, Moon. Some of them, maybe. I'm merely saying that he got people to vote with emotion because that is how I've seen him push his agenda, he plays people's emotions.
I'm sure there are those who voted for him because he's black. There are others that voted for him because he's a Democrat. There are those who voted for him because he's young. There's those who voted for him because they liked his wife. And as amazing as it sounds, there are those who voted for him due to his vice presidential choice.
I think a large group voted for him because he's different - in many ways - from anything that's come before.
Lenin was different too.
(Notice I didn't use Hitler! See, I'm not a dick)
I think Moon may have overstated his case a bit. Before assuming that ninety-something percent of black voters cast their ballots for Obama strictly on the basis of skin color, ask yourself this: Would all of them have voted for Alan Keyes had he won the Republican nomination in 2000? I seriously doubt it. Blacks vote Democrat; they wish to trade freedom for freebies, which is leading them (along with the rest of us) back into bondage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cR0sugseJfg
Regarding the "white apologist" thing, I think Moon is referring to the guilty white liberal phenomenon, whereby white liberals, out of a feeling of guilt and a naive sense of social justice, choose not to vote in their own best interest, but in the supposed best interest of perceived victims of past wrongs. Our greatest black thinker (perhaps our greatest thinker of any skin tone), Thomas Sowell, has written extensively on this topic (I highly recommend Black Rednecks and White Liberals--one of the most eye-opening books I've ever read), and Ann Coulter's latest work, Guilty, addresses it at length.
Incidentally, Alan Keyes undeniably runs circles around Obama both as an intellectual and an orator. Just watch the debates between Keyes and Obama from their Senate race, or, as Obama would say, uh . . . just watch the . . . uh . . . debates between . . . uh . . . Keyes . . . uh . . . and . . . uh . . . Obama. Great orator, my ass. How can you blame the two TOTUSs that have prematurely ended their own lives? They were brutally overworked. Poor things. http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpu...e-a-sound.html
I always liked J.C. Watts. It's too bad he is no longer an active politician.
Why did this have to come to this level? I am a African American, and I voted for McCain, not because of color of his skin, but for the content of his character (and the fact that he served, just as I did). I have read AK posts for years, many I have agreed with, some I have not. However now, you bring race into the forefront. A "Black" apologist? What is that? To me that is insulting, why don't you just call me the "N" word and get it over with, and we can all be friends. So who is it that I should apologize to? Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson? Never. I really expected better from all of you than this.
I categorized all of AK, I apologize for that.
I'm certain that you misread Moon's post, GC, but that's because it wasn't clearly written. He should have stated, "People voted for Obama, not because he was a candidate with executive experience, but because he is black, and they are either black, themselves, or guilty white liberals."
Everyone needs an English major.
I've known Moon all my life, and I've never heard him refer to any black person as a "nigger." He's no more racist than I am, and I'm not much of a racist. As a true conservative, I'm all for a colorblind society in which everyone has an equal opportunity to achieve success without regard to skin color. I do not believe in government enforcing equality of results, which is what Obama and the Left are all about. This is otherwise known as communism, which, as we have seen, results in equal misery for all except the elite.
Thanks,
Palooka
Resident Moon Apologist
I am on the liberal side of the fence for many reasons. I am generally open to talking about them and have spent many a Sat morning in WoW talking with Palooka while getting myself killed and talking with others. I don't get why people feel they have to label me with derogatory names. I'm happy to talk politics even knowing that I won't change a single mind and others won't change mine.
I voted for Obama for numerous reasons not one of them were for the color of his skin. He held my views on evolution, and reproductive rights, and perhaps healthcare for rural and self employed people (although the jury is still out on that one.)
I hope that I have treated people with different opinions than my own with respect, I would ask for the same.
Palooka,
It is OK with me, I am not angry with AK, let's just keep race out of the factor and stick to the facts, however we see them. I just want you guys to speak your minds freely, and I enjoy the banter, let us not go to that level that demeans us all.
Ok?
Cheese
I think the greatest factor that got Obama elected was that he was less Bushy than McCain. Whether it was deserved or not Bush was loathed and demonized by many.
They wanted change and they got it.
Let's get back on target here. Sarah Palin. When is her Playboy photo shoot?
But is she really, "That Hot"?
Cheese,
I understand your concern and sympathize, but this is the political forum, and while it may not be pleasant, race is a factor in politics and always will be so long as the Left divides people along racial lines. Some said, upon Obama's victory, that we were entering a post-racial era, but we conservatives knew that was wishful thinking; we will only see increased racial divisiveness under Obama. Just look at his first SCOTUS nominee, Judge Wise Latina, herself. Sotomayor is as racist as they come.
And yes, Palin is that hot.
I agree with you 100%. As far as the supreme court nominee, well let me delicate in saying that "some faction" wanted to make that happen and it did. Do I like it, no. Deception is going on there when any Supreme Court Nominee proclaims that she can be a better Court Justice because she is Hispanic. Give me a F!*N break. OHH DID I SAY THAT? (covering mouth)
Beaker,
Let me get this straight. Am I right in supposing that you will gladly give away the store to any old community organizer as long as he professes allegiance to your favorite scientific theory and the "right" to kill the unborn? What freedoms are you willing to sacrifice to ensure that Planned Parenthood--an organization founded with the purpose of literally aborting the black race out of existence--can continue merrily burning living human beings to death with saline solution and subsequently sucking their bodies out of the womb piece by piece for a nominal fee? How does securing this "right" by turning over your liberty to a Marxist like Obama help you and your family?
Did you know that Obama voted against a measure in Illinois that would have required doctors to administer life-saving medical care to victims of botched abortions? What do you call leaving a baby to die on a closet shelf? Did you know that he also opposed the ban on partial-birth abortion and the Supreme Court's later decision to uphold the ban? Do you support killing a baby whose entire body, with the exception of the head, is outside the vagina (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_W75zh1j2I)? Where do you draw the line, or do you? Obama is a pro-abortion, pro-infanticide extremist and a member of the death cult known as the Left. Do you count yourself among its ranks? Finally, do you even know what an abortion looks like? If not, I suggest you peruse the ghastly image galleries here. You ought to know exactly what you are supporting.
