I got a $300 'atta boy' gift card from work. I've been given permission by the wife to spend it on myself. I'm looking for your recommendation on the best card $300 can buy. I want to play BF2 with my settings maxed out. Cooling will be critical as my case cooling in minimal.

Seems even the 7800GT is down around $300 these days..
Just make sure you have PCI-E slots. Some of us are still in the 'ancient' days of AGP, and this is what I bought:
ATI X800 XT AIW
It doesn't allow me to play BF2 with everything maxed out... but it does well enough and then all the extras you get with the AIW card. I've been extremely happy with the card.
