    Portable Apps

Anyone tried this? Sounds like a pretty neat concept - all you need is a flash drive.

I have several of these on my thumb Clay and I love them! I never know if the customers computer is going to have what I need or not so without lugging the laptop I carry my thumb drive.

I also have a Thumb drive version of office 07 if you want it

Thanks for the offer. This whole concept is fascinating to me. Let me play around with the concept first before going to the bother.

Here's my "wouldn't that be cool" dream. Get a 10 GB thumbdrive (if such exists even), put all the work files and my Outlooks PST files that I normally put on my laptop HDD drive, directly onto that thumb drive. Effectively replace my HDD w/ that thumbdrive and use that every day at work. Back up as normally do onto network drives every few days as typical. Then, when traveling, take that thumb drive with me, leave the work laptop at home, bring personal laptop on road which I then have full control over - and can game on!

Currently I'm lugging around two laptops on extended travel. It's lame.

    Interesting....

UBCD isn't too bad and I started playing around with Puppy Linux. All self-contained OS's that can run from CD or Jump drive. Puppy Linux is great for older laptops as the whole thing runs from RAM. Sweet.

Don't know about a 10G thumb but I have a portable HD thats 250G and its smaller than a checkbook. Their going for around $100 these days. I carry it instead of my Thumb most of the time now, same concept only a bit bigger and ALOT more storage.

In a similar vein, if you have a spare laptop HD sitting around, you can buy a USB enclosure for it for about $30-35.

Want. How much memory does it take up?

    Project failed

Firefox on Portable apps cannot be used on work computer while in the office. It launches, but does not connect to internet, even when my internet connection is activated via Internet Explorer. It does however work on the laptop when connected to a different - live connection.

When VPN'ing into work on personal laptop - NO executibles will run while in VPN mode on the person (my own) laptop.

So basically I'm still going to be stuck carrying two different laptops when doing extended travel.

    520MB for the whole suite....

You can put the individual apps on instead of the whole suite their less than 50k each.
