The single reason I don't own an iPhone - AT&T.

It's no iPhone, but I must say I love my Motorola Q9c. It's only locked up on me once and that was when I was testing a beta version of SkyFire browser. The one area that it definitely is lacking in is the camera. The 1.3mp is pretty weak. But overall - the best $79.99 I've spent. I have the unlimited data/messaging plan with Verizon. I have my Gmail account synched using iMap. I have Gmail checking all my email accounts (around 5 or 6) so I always have all my mail at my disposal. I use twitter messaging, etc. Xtreme Agenda works fantastic as a PIN and syncs right up with Outlook. I'd rather use Thunderbird, but to be honest - now that I'm using Gmail with iMap, it's really not that important and Outlook works well enough for the limited uses I use it for now.

I wish I could use GPS - but Verizon has disabled the Google Maps GPS ability so that you have to purchase their Verizon Navigator service.

My cell phone has the ability to make phone calls with Verizon as my carrier. For that I am glad.

My Nintendo DS plays games. For that I am glad.

My Ipod Nano plays MP3's and movies. For that I am glad.

I pick and choose what I need so that if any one piece of technology is lost or ruined then I am only dealing with the loss of that one item. For that I am glad.

Overall I'm a pretty glad guy that I don't have or want an Iphone.

I have none of the problems you indicate above with my iPhone.

Caveat - I have a first gen phone, fully updated and backed up daily. I charge it at night and at work on my desk, so battery life is never an issue.

AT&T is rock solid in my area, and there's no dead-zones other than in the basement of the steel building I work in. And I rarely go there trying to make a phone call.

AT&T has a lousy track record in my area ... I've stuck with Verizon because their service is rock-solid around here. However, their selection of advanced phones seems anemic unless I want a Blackberry of some sort.

AT&T and T-Mobile (both with crappy local service) seem to be the two companies that get the nicest new phones with the neatest features. Pretty annoying.

Sprint has good coverage everywhere, but their customer service is the worst I've ever experienced.

The latest iPhone patch appears to have improved the stability of the Safari interface - thank goodness!

Is anyone aware of an integration solution for using the iPhone in a car? I'd like to just replace or augment my car stereo with something that will play my music, as well has allow handsfree telephone usage through the stereo speakers. Does such a critter exist? Is it GSM buzz protected?

The Parrot does look pretty slick. But not quite what I was going for. I'm thinking about getting one of these:

It has a bluetooth mic. Sounds cool, though my experience w/ Bluetooth has been so so.

I'm going to break down and by a 3G-S for fathers day. The engineering apps and connectivity to breaking news are features too tempting to resist. I've been resisting a PDA of any type for years, but I've finally broken down. The potential for increased organization is too big to ignore any longer. Plus, the Iphone is just too damned cool. However, the luddite side of me fears this all might be a gateway drug to Twittering.

My only question: Is the 32GB version worth the extra $100 over the 16GB version? I'm fairly frugal in my data storage, but spending an extra C-note to double the memory seems pretty reasonable.

The only reason to get 32 GB version is for video. Assume roughly 1 gig /movie. And of course, not every video needs to be preloaded into your phone, you can leave most of your library in your iTunes and just transfer when you want. I have a 16 GB and have never filled it up. I could, but am happy with the 16.

The apps and personal data only takes a tiny fraction - maybe 100 meg.

I'm happy with the 16, but I have to cherry-pick my videos.

If I had 32 gig, I could store them all.

Thanks for the input. Not planning on watching too many vids, so the 16GB should suffice.

Last week I was using my phone (old style 3G) outside and it was exposed to the hot sun for an hour. So it got pretty hot. When I tried using it as a timer for my activity, it gave me a temperature warning screen instead, and I couldn't used it. I took it out of the sun and it cooled down and started working fine again in a few minutes. I'm not too troubled by all this - I like the fact that it went into a self protection mode rather than burning up.

But this got me thinking, there must be a temperature sensor inside the phone. Is there a way to access this reading? Related to this, I'm hearing reports that the 3G-S tends to overheat. I'm guessing the faster processor is the problem. Any feedback on yours Fax?

Another question, I got a new watch that has a built in digital compass in it. Too cool, didn't know we had that technology. Any word if this is also available in the 3G-S version?

I haven't had any overheating problems with the 3G-S, and I've used it quite a bit in the Texas heat. And it's been a scorcher lately.
With that said, I'm not sure how I've ever lived without an IPhone. It's worth every penny, and then some. I purchased from the Apple Store in the local mall, and I was in and out in less than ten minutes, and it was ready to go right out of the box.
Here's my initial thoughts after a few days of use:
I'm having lots of fun with the restaurant locator apps "Yelp" and "UrbanSpoon". Both are free, and worth a try.
Also, I've ordered a case and screen protector: The Switcheasy Capsule Rebel Serpent. It's a silicon shell with a hard plastic "spine" on the back. Looks pretty cool, too. It includes a transparent screen protector as well. I'll post some impressions of it when it comes in. In the meantime, I've been using the Incipio Orion Sleeve. It's your basic soft leather sleeve, but it has a handy pull tab that pops the phone out of the sleeve for quick access. Highly recommended.

This thing rocks! I had no idea how cool a car stereo upgrade could be. The bluetooth works incredibly well, and folks can't even tell I'm talking to them via car speakers and the little included microphone on my dashboard.
