Looks like the mod community is coming up to speed. There is a lot of work going into a custom map recreating the Dawn of the Dead (the mall). A few minor skin downloads and other minor tweaks.

The zombie purist in me recoils at the idea of the special zombies. The Tank, while frightening, is just silly. The same is true to a lesser extent with the other specials. The tongue guy is probably the second worst.

If they wanted to make some zombies tougher than others, they could've easily gone another way without heading into the mystical.

Have former riot police zombies in body armor, for example. Make them tough to take down.

Without some of the unique abilities, it would take away from the fun of playing those different zombies in multiplayer games. Now, it's fun to get cycled through the Smoker, Hunter, and Boomer - and the occasional tank as they all play differently. It's not just about making them tougher to take down.

I guess you'd have to come play with us before we'd take your "purist" opinion at all seriously. It's a fun game - really!

No, no motes to farm. This isn't a WoW-vs-Zombie rant. I'm just saying that I like a little more realism in my zombie-fiction. The tank is cartoonish.

It all works well enough gameplay wise. That's not my point.

It's more like Resident Evil multiplayer than a traditional zombie movie.

Hell, as a purist I also have a problem with running zombies, ammo and guns in every bedroom and how being attacked doesn't result in death (just damage). But then again I'm sure that a purist mod could be easy to do.

Slow the speed of all infected to a walk.
Start of with your primary weapon and just two or three spare clips.
Instant death when attacked
Multiply the number of dead to the Nth degree


Now fight your way through the city.

While at a purist level it would be a bit fun and a challenge, but the current build - it's speed, challenges (special infected), weapon options, etc - make for a great pick-up game that doesn't require tons of thought and rewards you with success if you want it.

But then again I'm sure that a purist mod could be easy to do.

When the developer kit is released I suspect we'll find some mods like this which will be fun and a change of pace.

Until then it is what it is. And it is FUN!

That was a classic moment. Nuts and Hylander fighting through waves of infected. They are at the safe house doorway when we pounce on them and finish them off. Good times!
