Sony Online Entertainment has given a few strong indications that a sequel to PlanetSide is in the works, sending out a mailing to current and former PlanetSide subscribers asking them to take a survey, saying: "That's right, you heard what we said! We plan to expand the PlanetSide universe with another game and we need your help with the design. After all, who knows the game better than you, our customers, the people who actually play it! Dont [sic] worry about the original PlanetSide, it isnt [sic] going anywhere." This is posted on PlanetSide Universe, where they also note that SOE acquired the domain Planetside2.com on September 21. These hints are strong enough, but they go even more about this when they contacted Sony Online CEO John Smedley, who had this to say about the present and future of the MMOFPS:

John Smedley: A new patch is coming. Were going to be fully Vista compliant among other things and bug fixes / anti-hacking work.

John Smedley: PlanetSide fans will be happy We have big things planned in the next 12 months. Were working on something new thats really cool.

I loved planetside. Nothng like an instant action button for a 30 min. kill session.

Never played Planet Side but i am always game for some team based FPS action.... I assume this is a FPS game.

FPSMMO ? never heard of such a thing. If it required time like any other mmo I doubt i would be interested, having fun in Aion atm with a decent AK/wow turn out.

If its a once to twice a week deal for 30-60 min im all over it.

Planetside was my first "mmo" and I loved it immensely. If Sony brings this back in a new incarnation, then I am there in a heartbeat.

I'd be in. Hopefully they resolve the main issues with the first version before releasing the second. Namely the lack of purpose.

You fight all night to control territory, only to have it totally lost the next day while you're away working.

There needs to be more lasting benefits to your success...even if it means maintaining gained and lost territory until a pre-defined board reset.

Planetside is not a major time sink. That was one of the best things about it. A "Raid" went on for as long or as short as you wanted it to. The entire world was a never-ending raid. An average basecap took about 15-45min and a full island sweep could take up to 2 days. So you never really miss anything.

And yes, I would not mind at all to reactivate my planetside account. Toons not that bad.

AK had a great time playing this. As I recall we played for around 3-4 months before it started to get repetitive. As Squidly say, hopefully they will figure out how to make things more persistent and with more purpose. The action was just phenomenal!
