    BC2 Crash

After two days of non-stop playing, I had my first Crash to Desktop. Event viewer showed something odd:

A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (Battlefield Bad Company 2)

The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application

The Desktop Window Manager did not start because an analysis of the hardware and configuration indicated that it would perform poorly

I froze up solid three times in thirty minutes last night.

That's why I disappeared. I was so angry I walked away.

No freezing or lock ups for me last night. I am happy with the patch to this point.

I didn't have any last night for the hour I played, but had 3 the night before.

I read something about DirectX causing this problem - I'll try to look up the details and post the "fix" here this afternoon.

I had one lockup in about 2-3 hours of playing. Not bad. It's definitely client-side, as the server just kept plugging along.

As an aside, they're patching servers to R7 today. Included:

    Changelist:

    • Several common crash fixes. Especially those which have monitoring scripts that rely on the Remote Admin interface should see stability improvements.
    • PunkBuster can send commands to Remote Admin interface (so ‘pb_sv_task 0 -1 <stuff to send to admin interface>’ works)
    • Veteran-rank handling corrected (it was broken in R6 and possibly earlier)
    • Switched back to Release version of the low-level networking library; less debug output but higher performance
    • Increased the initial server reconnection interval to 30+rand(30) seconds
    • PB GUID generation is now based on EA account IDs (it used to be based on persona names)

Again, I had the same crash and event logs last night. I've disabled Desktop Window Manager... I'll see how this works out

Another item that I've found to help is disabling Steam's "Update News" popup. I was getting issues whenever that thing decided to let me know about some $14 game that was going on sale for $13.

Quoted for truth. And to say thanks. I didn't know you could disable their stupid sales pitches.
