Sprint - finally stepping it up

    http://now.sprint.com/evo/?id9=SEM_Google_P_Android

These spec's are impressive. That fast processor in particular has my attention. I like the big camera too, I use my cell phone camera a lot more than I thought I would. It only comes with 8GB of RAM, and you have to buy a separate 32 GB card (>$100) if you want to up it to that. Good that you can swap RAM, bad in that there isn't much integral RAM already.

Timing is pretty good, as my iPhone plan expires this summer. In my area, the Sprint network is more reliable outside of town (AT&T has been a disappointment). But I have requirements:

-2 year total cost of ownership needs to be at least competitive to iPhone.
-Nickel and dimeing of built-ins needs to be under control. In the past, Sprint has released phones with high features, but then wants to charge usage fee's to turn them on. It gets annoying and can add up.
-GPS needs to work, even when there's no cellular coverage.
-E-mail and Calendar needs to not suck, and be integrated with Outlook.
-Needs decent apps, not amazing, but decent (a trustworthy password storage app for one)

Keep a look out for an official announcement of Sprint getting iPhones later this year. Q3 just started so if there's not an announcement in the next couple weeks it unlikely that anything will be said til July 1st (Q4).

The "rumor" is that Verizon will have one beginning in September/October with Sprint following suit in November/December.

Its also rumored that the Sprint insurance coverage will cover the screen (though I find that highly unlikely).

    Clay,

As you may know, I'm a Google / Android *fan boy* fan *whore*. HTC has a couple of really interesting Android based phones in the pipeline. I'm not sure I'm a fan of their customized interface, but with Android - you can usually apply your own home screen applications that are available in the marketplace. I'm not sure if that's the case with the HTC Sense interface - but I'm just "assuming".

I absolutely love my Droid. I took a couple of months after it's release before I bought it and I'm glad I did the research and comparisons. Even today, I'm not sure if I would have picked the Nexus One over the Droid if they were both available on Verizon at the time. The Nexus One is certainly faster, but I like the form of the Droid, although I now use the actual keyboard less and less every day due to the ShapeWriter application for typing.

Thanks Highlander. How well does it sync up with your Outlook calendar? How about the GPS - how does it work for area's where you have no coverage?

I'll be honest, I don't know because I use all Google services. I use GMAIL for all my email (I have IMAP setup in Thunderbird for backup purposes). I have GMAIL pull in all my POP accounts.

For calendars, I'm using Google Calendar. I also use Google Contacts. For 'to-do' notes, I have a Pro Remember The Milk Account which has an Adroid app and widget. And finally, my favorite application - Evernote.

I do know if you have an Exchange account, it's not a problem. As for standalone Outlook on your desktop, I think there are a few apps out there for that, or you can use the free Google desktop sync to sync your Outlook to a GMAIL account (calendar / contacts) which will automatically sync with your Droid when you set it up.

The GPS works phenomenal for me. I haven't had any issues with the no-service areas, as I've never encountered one. But it does 'real' GPS, not the cell tower usage, so it works independently of your cellular connection. I have no idea though how it would handle the map cache of your area, etc. if it can't access Google Maps. The Navigation has been very good, and I'm incredibly surprised how well the traffic notifications work. They are doing construction on the toll area on Route 78, adding express lanes. I can tell ahead of time just how far the back-up is at that point. It's fantastic.

I handled an EVO today. Actually just a mock up, that had size and weight, but no internals.

I love my iPhone 3G. I'm stoked about the upcoming iPhone 4. But this EVO, WOW, the acreage on that screen is amazing. Is there anything I should be aware of with the EVO?
