I've read mixed reviews on the Archos as well, but I've never personally handled one.

The Dell Streak would probably fit your bill nicely if it weren't tied to AT&T as a smartphone and was just sold as a tablet with WiFi Access.

Hadn't heard of the Streak before. It really is nice--but pricey, since I won't be getting an AT&T data contract. Now that I know that I can get my Exchange mail on Android, that Archos "tablet" is starting to look better and better. Actual magazine/tech site reviews that I've been able to find have been much more positive than the user reviews on the various sales sites, and who knows how many of those are planted by competitors or posted by complete idiots.

OK--here's another consideration: what do I lose with a 3rd-gen Touch vs. a new 4th-gen Touch, besides Face Time? I know the older ones are a bit bigger, but that's not a concern for me--it'll be the same size (or smaller) as my old clunky PDA. As long as it can do e-mail/calendar, browse the web, and run some kind of e-book reader, that's all I need, and the older ones are now about half the price of the new ones, and with more storage space.

Sorry, I can't really comment on that. The most 'recent' Apple product we own is an iPod Video. We also have the pack of gum Shuffle as well.

Epilogue: Woot.com has the iPod Touch 4 as their daily deal today for $40 under retail, so I bought one. It's a refurb, but everyone has nothing but positives to say about Apple's refurbs. Once it arrives, the Asus will be retired to full-time car GPS duty.
