    Android vs. iOS--non-phone

So my old Windows Mobile PDA is beat up and ready to be replaced--I'm still not in the smartphone market, as work won't pay for the data plan but will expect me to be connected and answering mail every waking hour if I get one. Is there any reason to buy a $300 iPod Touch over one of the $100-150 Android mini-tablets (essentially PDAs), keeping in mind that I already have an iPod to play music and it isn't in need of replacement?

The $100 - $150 Android tablets are Chinese junk. Most of them are using Android 1.6 or older versions and many don't have access to the Android app market.

The Android market is about to heat up, and it's about damn time as waiting for a good Android tablet is getting old. I've seen Android 2.2 running on a 7" tablet and everything is fine even, actually beautiful, though some say Android 2.2 isn't meant for tablets. Basically, Froyo isn't "optimized" for Tablets and Google has specific requirements for tablets only which will be more in line with Gingerbread and Honeycomb (Next versions of Android). The tablets that do come out with 2.2 will need to meet certain minimum requirements in order to access the app market.

But there are about to be some very, VERY good tablets released with Android on them ranging from $400 - $1,000+ depending on size and what you are looking for.

If size isn't an issue, as in the iPod Touch size is fine for your purposes - I'd just buy that. I don't think you'll find anything as good at that price range in the near future for Android. I think most of the action will be in the 7" - 10" range and be a bit pricier.

Interesting; I was looking specifically at the Archos 32 Internet Tablet--it's PDA-sized and will fit in my pocket, which is what I was looking for. I read a few reviews, and they looked mixed--about half said they were fine and the other half said they froze up and had to be rebooted constantly (pretty much what my current one does and why I'm looking to replace it.) I'm definitely looking for pocket-sized, so the 7-10 inchers are out for me.

Now it'll be interesting to see what happens when I take this to the budget approvers. "I need a new PDA, can I have $150 for an Android tablet?" is likely to have a different response than "I need a new PDA, can I have $250 for an iPod?" Guess I can always write it off on my taxes if I have to pay out of pocket.

I've read mixed reviews on the Archos as well, but I've never personally handled one.

The Dell Streak would probably fit your bill nicely if it weren't tied to AT&T as a smartphone and was just sold as a tablet with WiFi Access.

Hadn't heard of the Streak before. It really is nice--but pricey, since I won't be getting an AT&T data contract. Now that I know that I can get my Exchange mail on Android, that Archos "tablet" is starting to look better and better. Actual magazine/tech site reviews that I've been able to find have been much more positive than the user reviews on the various sales sites, and who knows how many of those are planted by competitors or posted by complete idiots.

OK--here's another consideration: what do I lose with a 3rd-gen Touch vs. a new 4th-gen Touch, besides Face Time? I know the older ones are a bit bigger, but that's not a concern for me--it'll be the same size (or smaller) as my old clunky PDA. As long as it can do e-mail/calendar, browse the web, and run some kind of e-book reader, that's all I need, and the older ones are now about half the price of the new ones, and with more storage space.
