OK I'm ready to sign up for this game.

Now the question is do I start as a single player or can I play with you more advanced types right off the bat?

Ya, as Squidly said you can either jump right in or play a bit offline to get the hang of it. When you spawn, there are boats near (stored in a chest next to the water) by to help you find some open land. Or, you can just walk/swim as far as you want until you feel like stopping.

Biggest suggestion I can offer though is to have the crafting wiki up and ready for referencing.

Minecraft.net auth servers had a few hickups... And the server updates are staged, tested, and ready to go for the morning.
