I've seen it at login. I'll usually attempt to log in 3-4 times and if that fails, I force-quit the app and load it again.
The genesis of this error may be different on our two systems though.

After some research this problem seems to be fairly common and is directly attributed to the brand of NIC. Specifically, it seems that settings the Transmit Buffers to 512 fixes the issue with most people. However, some NICs do not allow you to set this setting. People have gotten around this by either installing another NIC card or by adding a wireless USB stick.
Seems weird that it's hardware related but this is Java after all and a very BETA product.
