As an Comcast@Home user, this may very well effect me - sooner rather than later.

I suspect several other AK will be hit by this krep.

Geez...and I had been about ready to sign up for Comcast@Home this month or next month. Guess not--that $100 check isn't worth being without service.

I get more and more thankful for my DSL connection by the day! I called my ISP just to make sure when I move that I will be able to transfer my service. (My ISP no longer offers residential DSL, only commercial. Now, all residential has to go through Covad.net). They told me as long as I am an existing customer I shouldn't have any problems. I sure hope not! **Takes a look at the radius he has drawn around the DSL enabled CO's in Bethlehem on his map **

    Squid,

Does Verizon offer DSL in your area? You may want to call them sooner rather than later...

As someone who feels about Verizon as much as some Linux lovers do about Microsoft, , let me say I will always hold Verizon as a very last resort to any connectivity.

The short story of my experience with Verizon is that when I was look at broadband, I called about getting ISDN. Very mature technology, no problem. I bought a modem, etc and when they "connected" me.. well, lets just say I went 4 days with NO PHONE SERVICE at all. When I finally told them to cancel it and give me my normal phone service back, the lady goes... "Did you know you could get DSL on your number?" I said, Really? Considering 2 weeks ago when I called about ISDN I was told NO. She said, yes, im certain and we are offering the first 30 days for free. Verizon uses line sharing (you use microfilters, etc, your existing phone line, and they also use PPPoE (which sucks IMHO) Currently - I have a separate line and I have a truly "always on" connection. I don't have to 'sign on') Anyways... I was down 27 of the 29 days I "had" Verizon DSL. I called, cancelled, and ordered through Fast.net (Covad). I've been with Fast.net for over 18 months and have not had more than a single minute of down time. My sister works for Verizon and at the time, they were told in a meeting not to offer or suggest DSL because their engineers did not have a grasp on the technology.

Perhaps things have changed now... but I still Hate Verizon

I only suggested Verizon because I knew Squid was in the area where Verizon runs it's service (I think NJ is in Verizon country). If there is another DSL vendor that services that area he might want to look them up.

Yeah.. I understand that. I was just commenting that it would be my 'last' resort... but Verizon DSL is better than NO DSL I suppose Of course, I would make certain they throw in the dial-up 'backup' service in there because you would most likely be using it.

Heck, I don't even have a modem in any of my computers. Well, our iBook has one built in, but when I rebuilt the latest boxes... I didn't even install one. Come to think of it... I think I'm paying $9.95 a month for fast.net dial up service too! LOL

Last time I checked, I was out of range of DSL. If I have to, I'll check again Friday afternoon... :P

    DirectTV offers DSL now too.

    Unhappy

    We Apologize.

The number you submitted does not currently qualify for DSL service. We continually evaluate your area for DSL service, and in the future, if we are able to provide you service, we will notify you via e-mail. Thank you for your inquiry.

Got this message when I ran your number on both the Verizon and DirectTV site.

I would consider no broadband access a good enough reason to sell the house and move!

Well.... from the experience that I've had with Roadrunner, it has been pretty good. Besides the occasional disconection due to growth. One just happened to happen on an important practice and duel match night. Other than that, it's been great. I've switched the room my computer is in 3 times now, and each time they've came out to switch it all around for free. They've even been on time as well... kinda cheating when they give you a 5 hour window though. Luckily I only live 10 mins from work, so it wasn't a big deal to run back and forth. If you can get cable tv through a company called Time Warner, you can get a pretty good discount here with Roadrunner. They combine the bill, and my total only comes out to $70. $30 is the minimum you can pay for the cable service, and then $40 for the internet. Since I rarely watch tv these days, I went with the minimum allowed.
