Shades BF 1942 Multiplayer Demo out before the weekend!

Yep, it is OFFICIAL that the Demo is comming out this week. They even have a countdown timer on the official website and an announcement. The timer is at 2 days, 21 hours, 41 minutes, and 20 seconds. That's what? Friday? It will be the Wake island map. It will feature Aircraft carrier, Destroyers, Fighters (I have no info on which planes), dive bombers, light tanks, APC's, and scout cars from what I have read.

I, for one, CAN NOT WAIT... pant pant pant

Too bad I am probably busy with my folks this weekend but if my experience with multiplayer launches means anything it will probably be close to unplayable for the first couple days anyway. Of course it might work realy well on day one. We shall see.

I did also read that the scout/sniper class can spot for artillary that is both land and sea based so someone manning a ships guns can use the scout spotting camera for their shells. Nice.

I hope the flight model does not suck as bad as I have been hearing. I have not tried the Wake island demo hack for the single player game myself and nobody knows if the flight model in that will be the final thing (it probably is). Silly stuff like using the keyboard for the throttle is your only option and you have to keep pressing the "gas" or the engine shuts off. All on or all off is it. I realy hope they change that, I prefer a joystick for plane flying but the tanks control with the keyboard works fine.

    From the 1942 website:

The HMS Prince of Wales engaged Germany’s battleship Bismarck in one of the crucial turning points of WWII. Though seriously damaged, the Prince of Wales sunk the Bismarck in what is now regarded as one of the great naval victories of the war. Two days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese aircraft attacked and destroyed the Prince of Wales.

This isn't right is it? Any history majors out there? The Prince of Wales was indeed damaged in battle with the Bismark, during which the HMS Hood was sunk, but the Prince of Wales retreated from the fight with heavy casualties. The German victory allowed the Bismark to escape into the Atlantic.

The Bismark was latter tracked down by half the British Navy and destoryed, the initial damage caused by Swordfish bombers flying off the carrier Ark Royal. I believe destroyers using torpedos actually finished the Bismark off.

I'd be a historian if there was any money in it.

Take a look at the history books then take a look at the BF1942 version of history and you will see few similarities. They nod at history but don't follow it to any real extent, just enough for background for the game.

You want real historic "value" in a game? That is WWIIOL, but that game is not everybody's cup of tea. It goes the other way, following history more closely and the vehicles/units are much closer to what one would call "realistic". There are no hitpoints, so a shot either penetrates armor or bounces off depending on tones of variables including angle of penetration, muzzle velocity, shell size and weight, etc... and it is not how many times you shoot a tank to kill it but how well you shoot that tank (one shot in the right spot from the right range at the right angle and you have a cooked tank). The "fun" factor of WWIIOL is over all lower for most, but like war it is 90% boredom and 10% sheer terror. I like it, but most don't.

But while BF1942 nods at history but is not by any stretch of the imagination following history it will be blasted fun. I would not put stock into the history writings on the website. History is just a story to BF1942.

The greatest naval battle of WWII was the the battle for Leyte Gulf. The sinking of the Bismark, while a huge Ally moral builder, could not be construed as a "great naval battle". The Prince of Wales and the Hood attacked the Bismarck and the Prinz Eugen resulting in the Hood sinking and the Prince of Wales limping away in retreat. It was subsequent AIRCRAFT attack that crippled her, and eventually a group of destroyers that sunk her.

It marked a turning point in naval aviation and the end of the age of the Battleship. From then on air power would rule the skies and waters.

Despite the casual history, the game looks pretty cool. Does AK anticipate fielding a team of some sort?

It all depends on how many people want to play it. I'll play it. The single player demo has been fun but I am realy looking forward to multiplayer. The multiplayer demo will be a good measuring stick to how much interest the group has in it I would think.

Historical reality is not a requirement for me, though it is nice.

Palooka may be interested in it, but it is hard to tell

You can count me in the interested column. Faxman seemed to be with me when I talked to him last weekend. (And he might even be able to play with us this time around.) Looks like there might be enough to field a small team, or at least to have a good ol' time pubbing together.

WWII Online is a mess. The cornered rat guys seem to be doing their best interpretation of Cybil and can't decide what they are. However, in the meantime, they have turned it into a boring read of a history book and forgot that it was suppose to be a massive online game/simulation.

My subscription actually expired today.. but I removed WWIIO a few weeks ago after I got sick and tired of the ridiclous numbers the cr guys were using for equipment and the capture rules.

Yep, Hylander. That is why in my post I said the game is not for everyone. To each his own.

I do not find it as boring as you do.
