This was a good movie. Watching it prompted me to read both "Enemy at the Gates" and another more modern book the title of which I cannot remember (it did have Stalingrad in it).

Points both books mention.
1 - There was a female sniper that our hero did fall in love with. She eventually got hit by artillery while on patrol with another female sniper referred to as "The Cow".
2 - Zaitsev was hit somehow somewhere and he and the female sniper didn't see each other again, at least not during the war, and did not have any close attachement to each other ever again. (I forget the details).
3 - No mention is ever made of our Political Officer Friend.
4 - The boy who is killed in the movie in real life was a teenager, and no mention of him ever being used as bait.
5 - Gotta love the cockney accent of the russian boy...

Enemy at the Gates is a very good book about the whole battle, Our sniper friend only warrants a couple paragraphs.
