Sorry 'bout missing practice. Good story, though a bit long..

    Hi everybody:

I feel crappy about missing practice, but I think it was for a fairly good reason.

Remember my shitty '79 Volvo? Well, upon my return from Alaska, I found that some crackhead had blown out my side window, ripped apart my dash and STOLE MY RADIO! OUTTA A '79 VOLVO! It was worth maybe ten bucks, at best. In the time it took to steal and fence it he coulda made more money working at McDonald's.

Combined with the fact that every part of my brakes were grinding and I was using the e-brake to stop, I decided it was time to retire the old girl...

I called a grisly old Swede in Ballard named Nelson (!) who has a Volvo-only wrecking yard and asked him how much he'd give me for my car.

    "What year is it?"

    "'79"

"Then that's how much I'll give you for it..."

    "WHAT!"

"Whatever year your car is, that's what I'll give you." (sigh.)

Anyway, I declined and gave my faithful steed to a friend of mine who just had his car stolen and spent all day today buying a truck. Afterward, I had such a good time playing with it that practice dawned on me just about the time I realized it was too late...

At least now I've got something to pack scuba, ski, and camping equipment into and can still park at Costco and not worry about door dings.

Sorry again about missing practice. I've been practicing my ass off after the holidays and I'll be ready to help kick some ass on the Doolittle Raiders. (great name!)

See you all then, if not before.
    Hasta,

    Curt,

First I hope you received my email yesterday.

Secondly, I'm an old Swedish Brick lover myself! I had a 89 240DL that I absolutely loved. It was in magnificent shape when I bought it with 114,000 miles (Like new for a 240! <G>). It was champagne color, overdrive, A/C, heated seats, etc. I still miss that car in many ways. I use to plow through snow with no problems and it rode like a dream. I had the car for a few years and then some maintenance items were starting to add up so I traded it in on a Nissan Altima. BAD decision. I liked the Altima in that the 4 cylinder was very smooth, I liked the HUD, climate control, auto sunroof, etc... but the damn dash warped and the defroster vents wouldn't sit down in, etc. Then the rear brakes locked up on me and I had to replace the calipers, roters, etc. I should have kept the Volvo at the time.

Have you seen the new Porsche SUV? It'll take me a while to wrap my mind around that concept.

The whole idea of a luxury truck to me is stupid, let alone one with 440 hp. I've always been the type of guy who believes that leather has no place in a truck and you probably shouldn't even have carpet, just rubber floor mats so you can hose it out.

Those things they call SUV's aren't trucks, they're glorified station wagons.

So what did I get? A luxury truck with leather... (sigh.) The used vehicle market here is so bad that I just couldn't pass up the deal. I picked up a Ford Exploder w/ a 5.0L V-8 and traction-control AWD, dirt cheap.

I'm buying some rubber floor mats this morning to make myself feel better...

I've got no problem with idea behind the luxury SUV. They serve their purpose. Yes, they are simply juiced up station wagons (or Mini-vans with balls.) Big deal.
There is a need for them. However the Porsche version kind of goes over the top.
Mercedes? Lexus? Volvo? Sure. Porsche? Not beyond the concept car stage in my book.

It's a lot like that high powered pickup truck (and SUV) that was released a few years ago. The "Lightning" or "Typhoon" or something. Those trucks would do 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and could haul maybe six 2x4's. What's the point?

I have roughly 110,000 miles on mine and never had a problem with it.

Its a death trap in the snow though. Rear wheel drive and weighs about 20 pounds.

talk about death trap, first week of owning it i got my self on to a crosswalk. it was slippery and the car just went straight. lucky there was no one around, but i did bent my rim and front suspension, of course a week after that i bought new tires.

Dont ever ever buy Nitto 460 Touring tires... believe me a little water and your all over the road. fast or slow your going to loose control.

I drive a 84 Mazda 626, its a beast...5 speed manual, 2.2L, I repainted the hood with a roller and its a darker blue then the rest of the car, but its nicer then the rust that use to be there. the only problem I ever had was a broken brake line, luckly it was only the rear brakes and I was still able to stop the car before blowing through the red light. I was pretty thankful for disk breakes at the time because if I didnt stop, I'm pretty sure I would have died in that car.
Turns out theirs a small washer or some kinda flat disk inside the working of the brakeing system fell off..or rusted off (im not sure) was the cause of that. I still drive it even tho I have to leave a chunk of cardboard infront of the rad, just so the engine will heat up enough for some warm air in the cockpit
