I haven't seen much in the way of compelling liberal arguement, but I'm always willing to listen.

As a belated answer to Pez's question to me on Team Speak when I mentioned that my cousin had been called up for military duty - yes I still fully support the "Upcoming War Against Iraq" (tm).

I'm with you Squidly. A very good friend of mine is an Army Reservist and he is being called into full duty for 9 months beginning in Early March. Pretty tough since he just built a brand new house in August, Started a new job around that same time, and just got married in December. He has absolutely no regrets and fully supports the war effort.

I missed out on a political thread! I gotta get my post in.

    . . .
By telling people not to debate you are encouraging the further marginalization of our culture and limiting yours and everyone else's general awareness and intelligence.
You know that the world is getting better when liberals start whining about how no one wants to debate them. For years they didn't want anyone to be able to disagree with them.

You see, I went to college in the heyday of political correctness. In case you're too young to remember, Pez, that was where the academicians defined one set of political views as correct, and made it known that everyone under their power had better adhere to those views, or else. Students were thrown out of school for jokes that the liberals deemed offensive. College disciplinary boards decided that student were not allowed to defend themselves against accusations of date rape. They wrote it all down, too: Universities started drafting speech codes that explicitly punished anyone saying anything offensive, which meant offensive to liberals.

(Thankfully, I've been away from academia for many years now. Is that still going on, or has it cooled a bit?)

And now Pez is here to explain to us that the evil conservatives are out to squelch debate! I love it!

If you want people to listen to you, Pez, you have to understand a basic distinction:

Normal, healthy political conversation is often childish, inane, mean, and untrue. It has always been thus. For example, in the 2000 the liberal media looked at Bush's serious policy proposals and decided to call him a stupid frat boy. There is nothing wrong with hurting people's feelings or calling them names. It isn't squelching debate. It IS debate. One person's honest opinion is another's cruel attack.

Squelching political conversation is when someone tries to force people to stop voicing an opinion. For example, it would be wrong if your boss to always talked about liberal politics but threatened to fire you if you expressed conservative views. (That's called being a conservative in academia.) Or, to take a crazy example, it would be outrageous if the Congress passed a law making it a CRIME to discuss politics sixty days before an election. Oh wait! The liberals already did that one.

    So, to simplify:

Sharply criticising the views of others and ridiculing them for holding those views are NOT squelching political debate.

Threatening to fire people or put them in jail for expressing opinions you don't like IS squelching political debate.

    Do you see the difference?

I'm sorry, I agree my comment that "republican types" tend to dodge debate was too much of a generalization...

And I guess you are right... telling me to shut up because you don't believe me and never want to is your right... and I respect that... I really do!

I'm happy I could share my opinions with you. Silence is our worst enemy.

Also, I don't believe in political correctness, but I do believe in tact and basic forms of respect. I can apprieciate the enormous humor of Bribo's post but I hope he never runs across a rabid pack of down's syndrome olympic hopefuls anytime soon... cuz they're pissed!

Look guys, I know my opinions fall on deaf ears, and I honestly never expected to convert any of you! We are of completly opposite opinions...

Now let's go play some battlefield...
