Audigy 2 if you have a few extra bucks.

I'm using an Audigy Gamer and it works very well.

I am looking into the audigy 2 platinum, just not sure if I want to spend $200 on a sound card. The Audigy platinum on the other hand is about $50-$60 cheaper. Just curious if anyone has any other sound cards that are comparable or horror stories about audigy before I take the plunge.

Thanks for the repsonse Squid, do you have the audigy? If so any issues?

Hylander whats the difference between the audigy and the audigy gamer do you know?

i have the audigy 2 platinum, and it's actually my Room Theater System, i connect my Xbox Digital Optical Output to the front panel and my DVD Coax digital cable when is decoding DD the CPU Usage is about 10 %. i like it, the only i did is changed the remotes commands with my own, i can play music, start programs and a few things more with it.

Is it worth it? if you are going to use all the front panel for Digital Inputs or Outputs, the Aux In (from TV or something) and the remote control, Go buy it.

If you just need a sound card with a good 6.1 output or digital output, just buy the audigy 2 (not the platinum) is $100 cheaper.

I have the Audigy (Gamer, I think), and have a 5.1 speaker setup... works great, no issues, and is cheap.

The bells and whistles offered by the Audigy 2 and it's many permutations didn't matter to me as I'm not doing any sound mixing. I watch the occasional DVD, but it's mostly games games games, and the Audigy works great for that.

Gunny... I think the big difference was the bundled software and some the 'extras' that were or weren't included. Mine also came with joystick gameport that took up a pci slot on the back of the case - but I'm not sure if that was exclusive to the gamer or not. I didn't install it because my Motherboard has one build into it.

Personally, I'm not sure the new Audigy 2 will give you that much unless you plan to hook up a huge 6.1 system or above most likely.

If you don't "want" to spend the extra bucks - just go with the Audigy Gamer. I think it will meet all your needs.

BTW - I never install the Creative "extra" crap - just the drivers. So I can't comment on any of the other items there.

Thanks to everyone for their input looks like I will probably go the audigy gamer route. Not a money issue just a case of why spend it if I won't use it.

Well I bit the bullet today with a little encouragement from Stitch and Bribo, mostly Stitch. I figured it was easier to spend the $300 then listen to him for the next month you should have bought it (j/k). The it I am referring to is the Audigy 2 platinum and a set of creative Inspire 6.1 speakers. I have to admit they are 100% better than the old analog stuff I had before. I hopped on a bf42 server and all sounds are working but I never realized how the game is actually supposed to sound. It is amazing how many sounds I never heard before in game. My wife hates them though they are "TOO LOUD" but in my opinion there is no such thing. Thanks again for everyone's input.

When a man is standing that close to the edge and just stands there motionless for more then .3 seconds, he's camping. So you just gotta give him a soft push. And all is well in the universe

I'm glad you picked up that stuff Gunny. Now you need to re-discover all the games you have missed the sound on. SOF II is a awesome sounding game. Also, UT2003 is another fantastic sounding game.

    shoot you soon!

How do you logistically set up 5+ speakers in a surround sound setup at a standard desk?

You can't you have to have stands on the floor and wires running all over the place. Or you gotta customize your room to have the speakers setup. Then you have a bigger mess if you ever move your stuff around.

    :-)

    More speakers!!!!

The left side of my desk is against a wall... and behind my chair is another wall.

I ran the speaker cables along the left side wall, around behind, then up to the speakers which are hanging on the wall.

Obviously, everyone's room will be different, and surround sound isn't for everyone.

    CampFire

I used to have this setup the 6.1 Creative 6600 or something like that, it sounded great for games and cool for movies, but my dear father and cousin where messing with an electrical bug, and fried half the appliances in our house

Well now i will not have a carpet to run the wires, but i will get the Klipsh 5.1 System, since 120 watts wasnt enough for me.

the thing i liked about the Klipsh and not the Creative Speakers, is that you can use your speaker wire, and decide how much is enough and where to put them exactly, the creative wires comes already with wires attached and plugged.
