    Socket A?

I was browsing on newegg.com and confused myself.

What types of Athlons fit in a Socket A? Tbirds, XP? Are they pin compatible? What kind of motherboard support is required?

Is the XP Thoroughbred compatible with XP Barton???

    Thanks for any guidance!

Wow, Alot of questions and no real easy answers. But, the answer is depends. Anyway, I will be proably telling you stuff you already know but I believe the Barton Chip set running at FSB 333 and the other run at 266 and 200 FSB. The XP chipset added SSE2 insrtuction set that the older athlon chip didn't have. There may have been a L1 cache increase along the way too (Barton at 512kb L1). So, the new Motherboards support the older chips, but not the other way around. You knew that... Dont feel like backspacing. Anyway find the motherboard you want and then go after the AMD CPU that fits the motherboard spec.
Remembering that the new 333 FSB require the fast memory (ie. PC2700 for 333 and PC2100 for 266. And oh by the way they all are socket A, not to be confused with the old SLOT "A" thunderbirds.

THis is off the top of my head and is subject to error. But I'm sure my follow techies will correct in a gentle manor...

    Thanks!

I was wondering if I could buy a newer mobo and put my current 1.4 GHz Socket A Tbird in and upgrade the processor later. More idle speculation then anything else. Thats cool that you can put everything from a Duron to 'Barton' in the same motherboard.

Intel, on the other hand, seems to change their sockets periodically to force everyone to upgrade.

I just ordered my PC... dunno if I'll have it by the April LAN party.
Yes it's big, yes it's expensive. Yes, I could've saved money if I built it myself.

I have like 5 systems already, I don't need another hobby machine.

    ViciousPC Paladin System
    Gigabyte 8IHXP i850E Mobo
    PIV 3.06GHZ
    1 Gig o Ram
    UDMA133 Raid (2x 80GB7200RPM HDs)
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128 GHZ 8x AGP Card
    16x DVD
    48x16x48 CD RW Drive
    Audigy2 Platinum
    NEC 22 inch monitor

Benchmarks reported for this machine by CGW
    3DMark 2001 SE Pro: 16882

Squid, buddy, your killing me. I am counting the dollars rolling by. That is a very awesome machine. However I know it could have been built by a whole bunch of us cheaper. But the sexy thing is that you open the box and it's ready to rock. No 3+ hours putting the parts together and doing cable management. Poof! it's ready out of the box.
Allthough Gunny and I were able to talk Bribo into building his own machine this time around. We didn't pay enough attention to you Squidly. We failed you. And because of that failure, you have had to gone the way of a pre-built machine. (Slacker) :-)

    I bow my head.

Nice machine, Squid. When is the expected delivery date?

Bonus check must have come today, eh?

newer Barton compatible motherboards can handle all the old stuff too (usually, unless it says otherwise) but you'll have a hard time finding a older motherboard with 333Mhz FSB compatibility.

Save your tears, I've built many machines over the years, and will
    continue to do so...

In fact I think I'm going to rip apart this old Dell and stuff it inside a pumpkin.

The best part of that system IMO is that 22 inch monitor. Shweet!

Did you go with the hot pink light kit like Stitch? Will you guys be holding hands at the next LAN party?

Yes, I have the hot-pink lite like Stitch, although I may splurge (!) and swap in a lavender light before the lan party... (shwing!)

    Yep, Raid 0 (Striping) Hale...

Let me understand that we have turned a simple AMD centric question into a size matters man discussion..... Just an observation!
