These kinds of programs are nothing new. Keep in mind, though, that they aren't for people that have top-of-the-line system looking to make them just a little faster. This kind of stuff is primarily for people that can't afford to upgrade.

If you can get more memory, why would you buy a memory compressor? Sure, you'll get more RAM, but it does cause a performance hit. The faster download thing is probably just an MTU optimizer. Higher MTUs (packet sizes) translate to more throughput, but lower interactivity (since waiting packets have to wait longer to be interjected into the data stream).
