    BF1942 crashing

    Hi folks,

I am having a very bad problem with Battlefield 1942, which just began this morning. Every time I try to load the game, the screen will go black for a second and then it will fall back to desktop. This happens both with Road to Rome/BF1942 and the Secret Weapons demo.

I upgraded my ATI drivers to the latest version a couple of days ago, and had no problems ... but I wonder if that might be the issue.

    I have:

    PIV 2.66 gHZ
    SB Audigy 2 soundcard
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro video card
    512 megs PC800 RDRAM

I'm really upset ... I was having a great time with the demo ... and then nothing works.

Any ideas? I have already reinstalled the demo to no effect.

What's the date on those ATI drivers you installed? I've got a 9500 Pro and I just updated my drivers (drivers only, not the apps/control panel) a couple-three weeks ago in a vain attempt to fix a GTA:VC crash problem. I haven't installed the Secret Weapons demo either.

    My vitals:
    1.1 ghz Athlon
    896 MB PC133
    ATI Radeon 9500 Pro
    SB Audigy

Sounds like you might want to try uninstalling the ATI control panel applications. Let me know how it goes--I meant to install that like last week, but I'll skip it if that turns out to be the cause of your BF1942 problems.

    I fixed it!

The first time I installed the ATI drivers, I used a combined package I downloaded from the front page of the ATI website. It installed the drivers and the control panel all at once, instead of with two reboots.

I went back and DL'd the 3.6 control panel and drivers files and installed them the regular way (drivers, reboot; control panel, reboot). All the problems went away.

I have heard no complaints about the 3.6 drivers.

    Thanks,

Aha--excellent. I'll grab the 3.6 control panel and see if that fixes GTAVC. Thanks for the heads-up, Ab!
