    My new toy...

It just arrived today--my 12 inch iBook G4. 800 mhz, 640 MB RAM--plenty of horses for all of my non-gaming needs. It's got both AirPort and Bluetooth wireless cards, so my next thought is to upgrade from my tired 10 Mbps hub at home to a wireless hub. Now if only someone made a BF Remote Manager client that worked under OS X (Panther/10.3), I'd be all set. (Its actual "work" purpose is to provide me with a "known good" machine for testing network problems of all varieties while getting some experience using OS X daily under my belt. From a personal standpoint, I wanted it for football season to have Giants stats and chat readily available from my couch during games. )

They are nice little machines. I had a chance to check out Squids and liked it a lot. However, the software thing is what will get ya. (case in point - the BF1942 remote admin tool)

Come on, Bribo...the BF1942 thing is quite the specialty piece of software.

We love our iBook (it's in the shop on a recall right now, but they're great little machines.)

Yeah, they're not for gaming. Thanks for the newsflash.

If all you want to do is surf the web, email and word processing than they are great. Beyond that - get a Windows machine.

Actually, if you want to do gaming, get a windows machine. Beyond that, get an Apple.

    My wife loves MahJong...

There's actually a zillion games for Apples - they're just titles that were released on the PC 2-3 years ago.

Although I agree with the premise on Apple and gaming, there are a number of titles for MAC and Unreal Tournament 2004 is going to be released on PC, Apple, and Linux all at the same time.

Relatively recent and new games available (or will be very shortly) for the MAC:

    UT 2004
    Medal of Honor: Breakthrough
    Call of Duty
    Halo
    C&C Generals
    Splinter Cell
    All the Sims series
    SW: Jedi Academy
NASCAR Racing 3 (with 3rd party mods now available as well)
    Raven Shield

Some not so new major older titles too like Quake 3, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Warcraft, Star Trek series, WWII Online, Evercrack, Neverwinter Nights, No One LIves Forever 1 & 2, and many others.

So MAC is not void of gaming.... but in a majority of cases, it takes a couple of months after the PC version is released.

Well, a laptop isn't the ideal gaming platform anyhow, so I'm not too worried about the quality of titles or lack thereof. The office bought this computer, so it doesn't set back my gaming a bit.

On the downside, the small laptop bag that I use to carry around a notebook this small looks more like a man-purse than I'd care to admit.

I actually believe that laptops are becoming more and more ideal for gaming as the screens get better and now both ATI and NVIDIA are building powerful video cards for laptops. It also helps that many manufacturers are now building platforms that allow for upgradeable video cards in laptops.

My wifes Sager runs most games awesome with its P3 3gig, 1 gig of DDR, and ATI Radeon 9000. Of course, it also weighs 30lbs..... but it wasn't meant to be ultra portable to begin with.

I do all my gaming on my laptop (Toshiba Tecra S1.) It runs every game very well, with a 1.4 centrino, 512DDR, and a 32meg moblility radion 9000, its a little powerhouse.
CS, UT2004, CoD, planetside, Tribes 2. As for image quality, I think the colors look better then a CRT.

On a side note, I'll never buy another toshiba laptop ever again, I've had 6 failures, resulting in over a month and a half of down time since september. I'm just lucky my school gave me a replacement for all the times I sent it back to be serviced....I prolly would have failed that semester.

I've had my motherboad replaced 6 times
