    New IP Address

The datacenter in which my server is hosted has switched its primary upstream provider from AT&T to Sprint. Thus, my server's IP address has changed from 12.165.52.152 to:

    63.172.129.152

The Ventrilo server and game servers will have this IP from now on.

This change will result in increased ping times for those of you who have relied on AT&T's backbone for routing to my server (mine have gone up by at least 10 ms). This is only temporary, however; the datacenter folks are working out a deal with Charter that will allow packets to be routed to the datacenter via AT&T's backbone rather than Sprint's. Packets will be routed through whichever backbone will be faster. For you other Reno folks, you will be routed directly to the datacenter through Charter without having to touch AT&T's backbone, meaning your pings will be lower than what you are used to (probably under 10). Currently, there's no ETA on when this will be in place, but once it is, everyone's pings should either be improved or at least as good as they were before the provider switch.

[All the stuff in the previous paragraph is garbage. Sorry.]

    Gained 20 points. :-(

My ping has been increased to the server for the past month or so. It used to be 60-65, then jumped to 75. Now it is at 95. I wish I could drop it again somehow.

Yeah, I'm sucking wind too. I'm now up to 145.. but I don't think there is much you can do about it Ab. Just something we have to live with. I remember I use to be in the 55 - 65 range too before the last move.

Mine's all the way up to an avg. of 35. Tsk tsk tsk...anyways, the only major thing I've noticed is, the server is almost always empty now, or with only 2-4 people in it.

Though, I had an awesome 3/4 person game with [BOA]Brad and Goon.

Did you guys move the server to the SF area?

Hylander, what last move? I moved it to another facility, then moved it back within a week. Your pings shouldn't have changed.

No, the server is still in the same facility. Only the upstream provider has changed. Pings will be back to normal once the deal with Charter is in place.

Palooka.. All I know is after the first time you changed the server location, by pings shot up fairly dramatically. It could be one of those 'coincidences' that something changed on my ISP end exactly at the same time you moved the server - I just know my pings were never the same.

But I was just on playing this evening and I was around 110 - 115 most of the night, which is pretty much standard for me since the 'first move'.

My only problem since the move is sometimes it looks for the old IP address.

All DNS issues should be resolved.

I just chatted with the main network admin at the datacenter. It turns out that there are no plans for a secondary upstream provider that will be used concurrently with the primary one. If they do use a secondary provider, it will be on a backup basis. Thus, you're stuck with the pings you're getting now until I move the server to a different facility, which will not happen any time soon. Considering the amount of bandwidth that I use, I'm getting a great deal with them.
