D3 - If anyone gets the chance today..

I read the following and alot of people claim it helped a great deal on their performance, but I won't get to test it out until later this evening.

    In your DOOM 3 directory, find "DoomConfig.cfg" (x:\Program Files\Doom 3\base). Open DoomConfig.cfg in Notepad.

    Find the line:

    seta image_cacheMegs "32"

    I changed 32 to 96.
Quite a few people have raised it to 128 and even 256. Just curious if it has any effect for anyone here.

    Thanks.

Additionally, we were talking about more than 4 players in multiplayer last night. There were servers showing up with more than 4, so I did a search and this is all that I've come up with so far:

GameSpy: What are the current player-hosting capabilities of the game? Is it still designed around 4 players, or has that been expanded?

RD: DOOM 3 multiplayer is based around 4 players; however, internally it is not limited to that. Mod teams will be able to support more.

GS: Will there eventually be a way for more than just four players to engage in a Doom 3 multiplayer game?

TH: That's just an artificial limit that we set. You are going to have to have a powerful server to have more than just four people playing on it. People's network connections are going to matter. Doom 3 is basically a broadband-only game. When you start adding clients, you're going to start adding traffic, and you're going to add latency and performance hits on the server. I have no doubt that one of the first mods for Doom 3 to come out will be eight-player Doom 3. But it's my guess that eight-player Doom 3 will be most effectively played on LAN servers.

And also.. avoid the "co-op" mod that is floating around. The rumor is that it is stealing CD Keys. So I'd be careful of any mods that are out there and wait and listen for any 'funny' things going on.

Also some .cfg files going around that lighten the 'dark' areas when opponents may be hiding making it easier to see them.

    Thanks.

Thats how I'm running on high at 1024x768 and AA2x.. I put a full gig to that cache setting.

Put 5 gigs to that setting and I may be able to run Ultra.. or die trying..

I did just jump that size up to 1536.. an extra 512. There was no noticable gain though, or fps change.. so I moved it back down to 1024, since thats probably all it will ever need.

I also see there is a console command:

    si_maxPlayers = "4"
Will display and/or set the maximum # of players

    Edit: Found this thread

Doesn't work, or at least it won't allow a higher number to be entered in the create server screen. Haven't had anyone yet join my server above and beyond 4.

But the cache setting you said works well?

Cache setting worked great. Much smoother gameplay and load time seemed just a little bit faster. Multiplayer was a big improvement. The only thing was that my cache was set to 20 default! it's currently 756.

I agree with Stitch, it worked wonders. Though I never even played online before I changed it..

the improvement multiplayer for me was when I was in a room with two other guys and the plasma bolts were flying around. I don't lag out now with the higher setting. Very Very nice

The cache setting definitely helps. I'm now running at 1024X768 at the high detail settings and it is running very smooth with only the minor stutter.

I haven't had a chance to try it in multimplayer yet.

What are you using to measure FPS? Fraps or the console command?
