    Question Any Entomologist out there?

I found this huge (relatively speaking) spider by my trash can yesterday. Does anyone know their spiders?
He was just over one inch long.

    (Photos are about 1.5 - 2mb each)

    Nuts,

My best guess is that it's a variety of orb weaver, based on what I have found online. Did you have a large circular spider web anywhere nearby?

Yep... had a clasic spider web going from the trash can to the fence. And although some of the pictures of Orb Weavers I found online were quite close, the text described the eyes as 2 horizontal rows of four. I'm not seeing that on my picture.

I like the dagger artwork on his back.

If it is an orb weaver (pretty sure, but not certain) it is nonvenomous, with a painful bite.

Yes, I am a licensed and bonded etymologist. The origin of the word "spider" is from Old English spiþra, from spinnan “to spin.”

Took me a while but I found it.

    Araneus diadematus.

This spider is a "Garden Spider" in the US, sometimes called a "Cross Spider".

I think you're looking for an arachnologist, Nuts.

I've seen a lot of garden spiders just like that in Washington.

We have a lot of the following in Nevada:

Damn fine work Bribo and Ab. I guess the eye layout was throwing me, but those pics on the website were dead on. I guess with the large number of spiders in that family, there's got to be a lot of variety.

Palooka - oh ya. I was never good in 6th grade science class.

I hope Stitch never opens this thread, he would be immensely freaked out.

That popping sound you hear is Stitch's arteries exploding.

Yep, I've killed a bunch of these before. We do call em Garden Spiders out here and they can have some truly impressive webs.

The splat nicely when shot with a BB. Sometimes those abdomen get huge and you can get a nice big splat.

... now I have to go find someone to hug me.

I swear I can feel them legs on me now... AAARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!
