    Sad Story

    Sad Story

My wife works with Casey's step father, and we attended their (Her mother and step father's) wedding a couple of years ago. There aren't a whole lot of details yet on what happened, but it certainly looks like a hunter fired way too close to residences. In PA, the law is 150 yards I believe.

Damn. That sucks. It's 500 feet here in New York. Around my area they catch idiots every year shooting deer from the side of the road.

MY high school teacher was shot in the back by a hunter here in NC. He was out in a part in NC that was rich in artifacts in which he was researching. After the incident, a new law was placed in NC. If using rifles, you must be at least 8 feet off the ground(tree stand). Therefore the bullet will not go very far but in the ground

How sad, I hope she recovers.

Here in Wisconsin we've had our share of bad problems to - as you may have heard.

Hunting season can be a bit scary. I go to a public rifle range, and usually find a pretty intellegent crowd. But when hunting season approaches, it's downright scary out there. Half the fellows you see during hunting season barely know which end of the rifle the bullet comes out - it can get downright scary.

About three years ago, an airman from our local airforce base successfully shot, field dressed, and tagged a white tail doe. Outside of every town the Dept. of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks set up game check points. Hunters are required to stop in and report any game taken. Now, back to our grinning airman, he pulls in and declairs a successful hunt. The game wardens, upon inspecting the tagged, dressed doe, informed our young serviceman that he has infact shot a female llama. The airman was required to pay the rancher who owned the poor shepperd llama (for sheep) for damages. what an idiot.

since this episode, all airmen are required to complete a hunters safety course to hunt in Montana (mandated by the airforce, not the state.)

    Update on the story

Looks like it may just be a freak accident versus a hunter 'error'. Not that the cause really matters at this point.

Bottom-line is this is why I stay inside and I no longer hunt. Shooting on-line is much safer!

First thought through my mind was... "18 and 7 months pregnant."
    The sun has fallen down
And the billboards are all leering
And the flags are all dead at the top of their poles.

So are you saying the first thought through your mind was to judge her?

I'm saying that my first thought (since it is revealed in the top 1/8 of the story) is "wow, that's a bit young to be knocked up. I realize it happens all the time. Just an eyebrow raiser.

Another FYI - She was released form the hospital today. She has very slurred speech, but she is walking around. From my understanding, the bullet didn't enter her brain, but it shattered her skull and fragments did damage the part of the brain that effects her speech and some motor skills.

Used to be considered odd to NOT have children by 18 only 100 yrs ago...relatively speaking Squid, this notion of not having kids until later in life is a new social convention. It has nada to do with biological capabilities and everything to do with modern society's need for financial gains.

Having said all this, if my daughter gets pregnant at 18 I would be disappointed...

Having said that, my mother was 17 when I was born...

All in all, the pregnant and 18 part of the story was so secondary IMO that it didn't dawn on me as a point of possible discussion until it was pointed out.

Canadian perspective: first thing I noticed was the flagrant and irresponsible use of guns all over that community...but as I said...it's a Canadian thing.
