    Tone deaf

    I really like Bush, but it's a huge mistake holding a last minute newsconference at 8:30pm EST on Thursday. Millions will be tuning in to watch Survivor and instead will get a talk about social security.

    Not good. You don't pre-empt one of the most popular shows on television..a once a week affair...for social security talk.

    What the hell are they thinking?

    Right, because God forbid they should preempt entertainment for something that seriously impacts every last citizen and voting illegal alien in the country.

    They put it on Thursday night, so it ticks off you and the Survivor fans. If they put it on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday night, it ticks off me and the Law and Order fans. On Monday it ticks off the 24 fans, on Saturday it's...well, I don't know what's on TV on Saturday nights. But you get my point.

    They're probably trying to reach the folks who can't read more than the first sentence of a headline in the NY Times and consider themselves educated on an issue... the same people who waste their time watching crap like Survivor.

    NEW YORK — The Bush administration put TV networks in a bind Thursday by scheduling a news conference during the first night of the May "sweeps" (search), when ratings are closely watched to set local advertising rates.

    CBS responded by sticking with its popular Thursday lineups, while Fox, NBC and ABC decided to cover the president live at 8 p.m EDT. So viewers uninterested in the president's discussion about Social Security could watch the castaways on "Survivor: Palau."

    CBS did air the speech until 9pm, when they switched to a delayed Survivor.

    When you watch as little TV as I do, it sucks to have your shows pre-empted.
