Possible Lag Fix

Hey... I heard a rumor and gave it a try:

It seems that there was a major upgrade to punkbuster that occured after BF2 was published. So when you're on a server, you PB may be trying to update thus resulting in a good ping to the server but lag while in game.

I update my punkbuster by downloading THIS FILE and then copy the .exe to <drive>:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\pb. Then run it. It will connect and download the updates you need and install them.

I connected to an ECG BF2 Ranked server and I was lag free. However, most everyone else was still skipping around the screen... so it'll take a while for everyone to get it.

This may not be the cure, but it looks promising.

This is another known issue with regards to PunkBuster not auto-updating as it should.

If this problem is widespread we'll post a full set of instructions on how to manually update on Monday. Meanwhile we have fed this information in to the team.

Great find, Nuts! I'm heading to try it right now. Lag is intolerable on EA's "official" servers.

also... I only play on 16x16 servers. Just played an hour straight.. no lag no rubberband.

I'm really let down with the lack of Ranked servers that you can get onto and play. Plus finding a good number of AK guys to play with so far hasn't been too good. Hopefully this week we can grow our numbers and begin to have the AK East and West servers fill up. ALSO as a side note, INSTALL xfire! It's worth it.

I've also noticed the 16vs16 servers are MUCH better with virtually no lag. Like Stitch, I noticed nobody around this past weekend. I think Saturday night Squid was on, and then last night Stitch.

As far as playing on AK East-West, the problem with that is it they are not ranked and YES - it matters to me.

Another lag fix:

Remove any unused NICs (both from device manager and the bios). Poor Punkbuster coding may have it constantly polling network cards.

Ahhh,,,, I have two VMware virtual NIC's. I'll have to disable them. Or do you mean flat out remove?

The recommendation from TotalBF2 was just to disable them so that PB wouldn't be polling them. But of course any unused hardware will drain resources.
