Unlocking weapons on AK East server

We talked about doing this last night in Ventrilo, and everyone who expressed an opinion, including me, wanted to give it a try. I didn't realize that this is a violation of EA's ToS, and could get the server banned from the browser. At a time when we're trying to establish a player base, I don't think this is a good move right now. We'll have to pick a time to have an AK "rank-building" night, where we all invade a ranked server, set up a squad, and get some unlocks.

I'm disappointed in the cost of renting a server. $8 per person per month per slot isn't much, but I know we don't have many people who would be willing to pay $8 per month just to have "official" rankings. (Even though it's cheaper than WoW - Flame pants on ).

I'm with you there, Bribo...the only ranking I care about is our team's on TWL should we go that route (a discussion for our private forums). But it would be nice to be able to unlock some weapons.

Yes, that is the issue. Certain weapons only become available when you reach a certain rank. Rank also effects on who gets the Commander role (assuming more than 1 person applies for it).

The problem is, if we unlock all the available weapons on our servers (east-west), they will most likely not show up in the BF2 game as it would break the EA TOS.

I think it kinda ruins the game with most of the skilled players trying to play on ranked pub severs so they can inflate there ego that they are good. I miss the days of 3-4 clans playing on sever where it was just to play and have fun with people you ENJOYED to play with. Not pub ranked severs! finally I heard the weapons you unlock are kinda lame anyways......

Minimal differences between locked and unlocked weapons that can be overcome by skill.

Plus ranking has been exploited:
Three guys join a ranked server.
2 of them join US, form a squad and lock it.
1 joins Axis of Evil

The three of them meet at the edge of the map, away from all players

The bad guy knifes one of the US soldiers (he gets point for the kill and point for accuracy)

The other US soldier (the squad capt) is a medic and revives the fallen soldier (he gets points for revive)

Repeat.

Add another soldier and you can move up in rankings even faster (this is exactly what the -UH- clan is doing, hence their high rank.

At the end of the day no TWL or CL team is going to give a crap about your in game rankings. I doubt matches will be held on ranked servers anyway as that may force teams with $$$ to excell against those that don't.

I could care less about ranking, TWL or CL is where its at. I've played on servers with the unlocked weapons and it wasn't that much of a thrill, didn't help me any. My only concern with unlocked our servers is having them blacklisted from the BFHQ browser.

Found this nugget from the TWL Competition Director:

EA will not delist your server for clicking the "ALLOW GLOBAL UNLOCKS" on the launcher. They are talking specifically to hacking via python {which is currently going) on which disregards the rank system entirely and allows the USE OF ALL UNLOCKS regardless of rank. This option via python script is going to be patched out in the near future.

All competitions will be with vanilla weapon sets for the time being until this unlock business has time to work itself out to a resolution for the long term.
