    Is BF2 Worth It?

I've been looking for a new game to buy, but either I'm getting older or the games or getting younger. Or maybe both.

Anyhow, I see from this area that some of you are playing it, and mostly griping about it. How does it compare to BF1942? I loved that one initially, but quit as the gameplay tilted crazily towards all-powerful airplanes. With BF2, have they gone more for balance or realism?

I would say that the game play has improved. There is more of a focus on team work and cooperation than in BF:1942. And while there are definetly some issue that need to be worked out (point farming, tk punish, & weapon ballance) I would say that it's a good game. The system requirements are a bit steep and I'm forced to play with my video settings tuned to 'medium'. There are some key mapping issues as well.

The next big patch (August?) should address most of my complaints and the soon to be release expansion pack looks really good.

For this to be a great game, give it about 12 months. N00b factor will wear out and the bugs will be fixed. Hopefully by that time the mod community will have made some great new maps and games on the engine (like DC)

I don't think it's worth it. They should of had more bugs worked out before putting the game on the shelf. My credibility has been hurt with a few people I've talked into buying it that are completely let down. I'm playing it on and off, but don't have much love for it. The ranked servers is the thing that bugs me the most. I feel all the weapons should just be unlocked for every one to enjoy.

I've been having a blast with it myself, but there are a few nagging bugs that really hurt the game. Also, the fact that there aren't more AKers playing has been a bit of a disappointment. BF2 has the potential to be a great squad based game, once the bugs have been ironed out of it.
That said, my recommendation would be to buy this game on sale, say for around $39.99.

I really enjoy playing the game. Like Fax said, I think one of the problems is there are so few AK playing on a given night. As mentioned numerous times, summertime doesn't help.

There are some items that bother me. I like playing on ranked servers, and yes - I like the rankings. BUT, I hate the fact that the rankings are only on EA rented servers and they are so fricken expensive. Also, the auto even teams feature stinks when it takes a player from a squad instead of a lone wolf player. This sucks. For example, Myself, Beast, Fax, and Stitch will be playing as a squad and all of a sudden one of us is switched to the other team when there are 5 other players who are lone wolf and aren't in a squad.

I still think this is a game worth having.

OK, I'll hold off till August and see if the new patch fixes things. I gotta have key re-mapping.

You can re-map keys, you just can't remap to the numpad.

Anyone who has this type of issue is a person who needs the numpad re-mapped.

He guessed it: I put everything on the numpad, where I can hit up to 26 keys without looking. I never learned WASD.

You should try the demo, Leo. I think it's still up on the FTP server, ready for speedy download.

It sure is. I for one am loving this game--playing roughly three nights a week right now, hopefully more once fall hits. A good balance, avoiding smacktards is simply a matter of finding some well-run servers to play on (which should get easier once 1.03 adds favorites to the server browser), and the rank progression and medal system adds a bit of an MMO feel to the whole thing. I'd highly recommend it.
