Personally, I would do one of the cruises. There are a couple of companies which use retrofitted russian ice breakers. They can take you places that no other company can. Very cool and pricey

I watched an INHDTV special on the icebreaker Khlebnikov, very very interesting. Great food, scientists onboard to help you out. They provide all the arctic gear you need and take you to island that few if any people ever visit. They have a helicopter to take you to even more remote sites . Awesome.
