DSL questions

Ok so my dsl sucks... I will be playing and everything will just stall, I will be browsing the internet and occassionally web pages will take forever to come up, and sometimes I will totally lose connection and I won't be able to get it back for 15 to 25 minutes. All of this is just beacue of a crappy ISP? Or can some of it be because of a crappy ethernet card? Or maybe the DSL modem that I got with the package? Or maybe some crappy wiring? I know something needs to change but I don't want to change and just have the same problems because it was infact not my ISP. So if anyone wants to give me the load down on all this stuff I would super greatful.

Also I have heard Speakeasy is a really good ISP, if anyone wants to check out there web site and tell me what they think, that would be great.

I feel your pain .
I have Prodigy through SBC/Pac Bell at home. I have Pacific Bell at my office. Both ADSL. Same distance from either to the main office. Same connection speed. Basically, the same routing. The office runs for weeks (368 hours straight without a break in the carrier before I reset it, I now routinely reset the connection weekly) without a glitch. At home, Prodigy resets my connection 3 to 4 times a day, with one of them generally around 7 o'clock PM (plus or minus 30 minutes) .

It's been recommended that the modem be turned off for 2-3 minutes every few days to allow it to resynchronize and clear whatever internal memory circuits it has. Beyond that, I don't know what to tell you.

thats a great site for troubleshooting. it didnt help me much, but then again im on a decent DSL company. so they try not to screw you around.
theres a speed test. do that first. im not sure if you ahve to login. if you do, come bug me, and ill give you mine if i still have it.

I second Dr. K's advice about turning the modem off periodically. I get a similar funny problem with web pages, even if direct game connections are fine. Turning off the modem for a minute or two often helps.

I've been wondering about static buildup, because once I get a pretty good shock from my modem. How do I drain static?

You'd think that the modem would be grounded and that static wouldn't be an issue. You sure it wasn't YOU who were statically charged and you grounded out at the modem?

Coulda been, I dunno. But how would the modem be grounded? It's got a two prong power plug and then the cable connection, which is insulated. Does the cable wire ground it?

I think the cable itself provides the ground.
