Unhappy Been MIA for a couple days

Sorry guys for missing Gruuls and SSC last night. I been hanging out at the hospital the last couple nights where my nephew has been.

His name is Nicholas, he's a 17yr old kid who has a bright future ahead of him still (we hope). He was out with a couple of his friends on Friday night and they were all in the same car and being dumb kids they started daring each other to do even dumber stuff. My nephew thought he could pull off some "Jackass" type of trick. It didnt work. Apparently there is this thing where they open the door of a moving car and touch thier feet to the ground? OH MY GOD!!! thats insane!! 25-30mph is pretty darn fast. It obviously didn't work how he thought it would, it rarely does for teenagers, they are missing that little voice in their head all to often that says "wait ....this could hurt or kill me".

So, not to drag that out any further, he is the Hospital in a coma, with 2 brain bleeds and a swelling brain. They induced him into a coma. They said the pressure is starting to drop and that they may start to try and pull him out of the coma on Tuesday. Thats when we will find out if he has any brain damage, or other damage from the injury. He has a large family that has been thrown into chaos once again, since it was only 18 months ago that his mother passed away from cancer. I think my brother-in-law is gonna snap from the stress, he has 2 other children, ages 12 and 15.

This is a kid who 3 days ago was filling out college apps. Makes me sad.

So, I don't how many of you are religious types.....but I'll take all the prayers and thoughts from anyone that he recovers from this 100%.

Sorry about the long story, I'm more the burly, wont cry if I loose a finger kinda guy, so typing this out helped abit, and I was comfortable sharing this with you guys. So...thanks.

    Myd

    Just an update.

My nephew is still in the induced coma. They are talking about trying to start to revive him tomorrow. They did a CAT scan yesterday which was encouraging. It showed no obvious damage other than some bruising to his brain. It will be the scariest when he is finally revived and they start to evaluate him to see if there is any damage that didn't show on the CAT scan. He had a scary moment yesterday also when his heart rate and cerebral pressure skyrocketed due to fluid build up in his lungs as a result of the breathing tube. It was starving him for oxygen. They corrected that and he seemed to quiet down again.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts and well wishes. I appreciate them all.

    Thanks

    Hello All,

Just a little update for those that had read this thread previously. My nephew came of the ventilator last night at about 2pm. They needed to get him off of the drugs that were keeping him in the artificial coma they put him into. He had been on the vent so long that he was starting to develop other unrelated issues such as fluid in the lungs that would be unwelcome additional problems.

This is the hardest thing you ever want to see someone go through. It is like going cold turkey from a heroin addiction. It really is as bad as you can imagine it. It is amazing how strong a 17yr old kid is when he is thrashing his arms and legs wildly in a hysterical unconscious rage.

My wife and I spent last night in the hospital with his father taking turns holding him down so he wouldn't hurt himself, as he had been breaking all of the restraints they had tried using to hold him down. He finally calmed down and we got home around 3:30am and we finally got to drive home to get some sleep. This morning my Mother-in-law called to say that Nick had come out of it, and was very groggy and slurring his words but was able to more or less respond to some basic requests and questions. We went in today to have him greet us with a hello that was very muddled and slurred. But he can move everything and answer questions correctly.

I am so grateful that he seems to have come through this ok. We will know the extent of any damage that we cant see yet over the next week as the drugs gradually wear off and they can start to evaluate his mental condition.

I will up date one last time, and all should hopefully be well. This was a scary way to spend 8 days, in an ICU waiting room.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts and wishes.

    Myd
