Great story about a car

One of my favorite 'movie cars' was the Camaro in John Cusack's Better of Dead. I always thought it was one macho car. Well, someone found it and restored it. His story makes for a pretty good read.

Beautiful car. That must have been a labor of love because a restoration of that caliber is not cheap and the 'value' is not as high because the car isn't 'original' as the numbers don't match.

What are your own personal car stories?

There are exactly 2 cars in my life that I have loved.

The first one is a 69 roadrunner . It was finally too badly damaged in Rita for restoration to ever be possible but I loved that car it has lived at my parents house since well '69. IT still resides there albet sort of in 2 pieces.

The next one was a Toyota Celica (1985 I think). All square and boxy and angular. I had that one in college. It had a 195,000 miles on it when my dogs decided to take it driving resulting in a new car purchase.

So fess up are you currently restoring a car? Have you had any great cars?

I've had so many cars in my 'short' life, since I'm ONLY 36... and being a car buff and all.

I had two "first" cars as I got them about the same time. The first of the 'first' car was a 1976 Toyota Celica GT. I remember being impressed because it had 2 spark plugs per cylinder. I had no idea what or why or cared... but it was a bragging right. It was given to me by a relative for a couple hundred bucks. Rust bucket, but I had alot of fun with it until I flipped it and ended up on my side staring at people looking out a Ponderosa Restaurant window eating their dinners. A guy with a 3 day old Park Avenue driving at 8PM in the fall, after daylight savings ended, in the rain without his headlights on and I got a failure to yield ticket.

Anyway, the 2nd of my "first" cars was a white 1968 Mustang Convertible which my uncle had restored for me. I loved that car and held onto it for several years. In the mean time, I had several other cars including a 1977 Chevy Monza with the IMSA chassis kit. That was a surprisingly great car to drive. A small block 305 V8 in that small car was a blast to drive. I also had a 1970 Chevy Nova that had a 350 4-bolt main in it with a 3 speed manual tranny. Then there was my 1968 Plymouth Barracuda with a 318 and Torqueflight auto transmission. That was a cool car as well. Also had a 1981 Trans-Am that had the piece of crap 302 engine in it. Red, rusty fenders, and the big screaming chicken on the hood. Blew that up and dropped a 350 out of a Monte Carlo in there that had the police interceptor manifold and carb setup. Oh, and I also owned a Chevy Chevette and a Chevrolet Citation X-11 during those times as well. LOL



But my real "baby" came when I purchased a 1981 Red Corvette with T-Tops.



That's not "my" corvette, but it was identical. That was my girl. My senior year of high school. I regret till this day having to sell it.

My first car was a Super Beatle that Pops Murphy bought me... it was so rusted that we were lucky that it didn't fall apart on the ride home. Yep, we got screwed. So I was given dad's 1984 Olympic Edition Buick Regal. By the way, Olympic Edition = rear windows don't go down. Go figure.

The first car I bought was a 1990 Geo Storm; bright yellow. Yep. I was that guy. I crashed it a few months later and lost it while battling with the insurance company over the next two years. With the insurance money, I bought a 1980 Ford Bronco XLT. This was a beast. A great car that was on it's last breath.

I drove the Bronco for about a year and traded up into my 1990 Volvo 240 DL. I've had that care for the past 14 years.

I had a 1989 Volvo 240DL. Loved that car. It was the first car I purchased after graduating from college and getting a job. It was immaculate and only had like 89,000 miles on it. As you know, for a Volvo that's not even broken in yet.

My first ride was not even my car but the family 1976 Grand Marquis. Lime green. Look up the word "boat" in the dictionary and you'll see a picture of this automotive monstrosity. Hell, it came with an anchor you would drop off the bow every time you parked. God I loved that car. Could fit at least 12 friends inside comfortably. Loads of power.

I went off to college and my brother inherited the green beast. One day he skipped school with a buddy and headed up the Northway during the middle of a snow storm to go skiing at Gore Mountain. He spun it out, hit a guard rail and careened backwards down a 150 foot embankment.

And that was the end of that. What a car.

I've only had 2 cars in my life - I tend to run a car until it dies..lol. First was a 1989 Nissan Sentra with vinyl seats and 1 speaker.

My current car is a cherry red 97 Toyota Celica GT Convertible. I love this car, and despite it's age and dents and bumps, I am SO reluctant to replace it.

But, all things must come to an end, and in a month or two I'm going to be purchasing a black Solstice. =)

I've had several cars in my 40+ years :P

First one was the cheapest POS my old man could get for free......a '68 Volkswagen Bug. It was painted with sky blue latex house paint and had the flared rear wheel wells with Chevy Corvette 15's on wheel adapters.....it was an awful car. My buddies and me actually burned it up having bottle rocket fights while driving down a highway one night. So that was great incentive to buy my first new car....a beautiful 1984 Ford Mustang GT. It was the first year the offered the quad shock rear end, and it had no computer and very minimal emissions.....it was one of the fastest production cars for 4 or 5 years....ate Corvettes for lunch (miss my baby). I still have the license plate hanging in my garage....lol

My first 2 cars were both '68 models...I started driving in 1981

Then I got married in 1995.........

3 yrs later I bought a 1998 4-dr, 4 cylinder Hyundai Sonata....and have been driving it ever since......still trying to figure out what happened....lol
