I think the whole process in building your own is the most rewarding. You know and control each piece of hardware you put into it. And the awesome feeling you get once it's done and up and running is really worth it.

That awesome feeling is only matched by the sinking feeling if something doesn't work and you can't figure out what it is.

In some ways it's like life.
