    The Damn French!!!

    First the installer doesn't recognize my Core 2 processor and it doesn't support widescreen formats out of the box??? Unbelievable.. I had to download a hack to get it to work at 1650 resolution...

    OK, preliminary point of view - 3 Words:

    1) Pile
    2) Off
    3) Shit

    I've spent an hour with this thing and what I've found is no native widescreen format and even when I run at a lower resolution centered on my screen, I can't get more than 28 fps. V-Sync is off. And I turned everything to medium and below. When I get into areas with enemy, I drop into the teens.

    I'm running an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 2 gigs of RAM, and an ATI X1900 w512mb PCI video card.

    I guess this is what happens when you directly port a kiddie console to a PC. Anyone want a reduced priced copy of RS: Vegas??

    1.02 patch is out today (the second patch in 9 days). No word yet on what it fixes but it's a biggie (~82 megs), so hopefully it'll address some of the slow performance issues and multiplayer crashes that seem to be the main topic of discussion over at the Ubi.com forums. My monitor isn't widescreen, so I'm not affected by its lack (surprising, since it's an Xbox 360 port, and that console supports 16:9 out of the box). I'll update my findings once I give it a lil' workout.

    Update: here's the patch changes

    ================================================== ==============================

    Rainbow Six: Vegas v1.02 Patch Contents

    ================================================== ==============================

    Overview
    ========

    * Fixed a crash when player is kicked from server.
    * Fixed a crash when fetching online matches (quick and custom search).
    * Fixed a crash/freeze that occurred after many games have been played.
    * Fixed a problem when switching from Online to LAN mode.
    * Fixed the freeze issue after the Unreal logo related to the Language for non-Unicode programs setting.
    * Throwing a grenade on a player using a turret will now apply damage.
    * Removed Eye Adaptation.
    * Radar jammer now jams all players.
    * Fixed map rotation issue on dedicated servers.
    * Fixed the choppy Ubisoft logo animation when the game starts.
    * Reduced lag with in-game videos on certain computers.
    * Many Tutorial-related inaccuracies have been corrected.
    * Fixed a dedicated server crash related to equipement.
    * Fixed the cursor being stuck in desktop sub-rect after an ALT-TAB.
    * Version number will now be displayed to the user in the main menu.
    * Fixed a bug while observing a game where while using the joystick, the A button was not displayed properly.
    * Fixed controller problem where wrong button was assigned to exit turrets.
    * Fixed the missing grenades and ammo when going from Realistic to Normal mode.

    Doesn't really fix much. Still no native widescreen format, and the FPS still stink. =(

    I've been using a widescreen hack since I picked up the game. It works fine.

    http://www.widescreengamingforum.com...pic.php?t=8072

    If you want better performance, you might try turning off the postprocessing.

    KellerGame/Config/PC/KellerEngine.ini

    bUsePostProcessEffects=False

    The game runs fine on my machine with everything cranked up. I have the postprocessing on, although I find the full-screen glow effect pretty annoying. It looked damned good with postprocessing turned off, but you lose a lot of the game's effects, including the nightvision and blur (after being hit) effects.

    After doing some tweaking, I was able to really enjoy this game. I think it's a great game despite the console feel. My only gripe is the checkpoint system; there was one segment of the game that I must have played through 30 times (in realistic mode). It can be mighty frustrating.

    I'm trying to think of a game I've purchased that was this bad out of the box... I'm sure there are probably one or two out there, but I haven't come up with it yet. Well, WWII Online was pretty bad at first... and WoW had it's moments - but they were multiplayer online communities. Vegas is just a port (I very, VERY poor one) from a console to PC. It probably shouldn't have been done.

    I have the widescreen hack, it does "work" fine in terms of displaying in widescreen. But I don't think 15 FPS should cut it on an Intel Core 2 Duo 6600, 2gigs of RAM, and an ATI 1900XT 512mb video card. Especially when the graphics aren't "that" great and are cartoonish. And that was with shadows on very low and blur on low. I don't want to turn down all the graphics and/or hacks just so I can play it in a diminished capacity. Unless they release a MAJOR patch that renders the game useful, it was a complete waste of $50. It didn't even recognize my Intel processor when I installed it. At the moment I'm running it at 1024x768 resolution just so I stay at 35+ FPS. Looks pretty crappy on an LCD interpolated. In 1:1 mode, it's just too small on the screen.

    This is worse than BF2 and Gunny not being able to map the keys.

    maybe my standards have dropped in my old age. Planning some multiplayer with my son tonight! Coop mode. But compared to COH, nothing hits the mark!

    I'd like to know your settings and how many FPS you get. I can play GTR2, GT Legends, rFactor, RACE, HL2, and COH at 1650 and every graphical eye candy maxed out (can even use high AA & AF on a few) and I rarely fall below 100fps in any of them. Oh, and they are all OLDER titles and support widescreen format!

    Just read the UBI forums... now that they fixed the multiplayer CTD, the largest amount of complaints is still the horrible performance and no native widescreen format. (Again, the 'hack' works fine. Maybe UBI should just implement it as is.. can't mess anything up worse than they have.)

    So is this worth picking up? I haven't seen any posts about how good the game is only about the problems so makes me wonder if I should get it or wait until the price drops?

    I'll post a follow-up after playing online last night with Fax and Palooka for a few hours since I totally condemned this game as a POS and banished the box and DVD to the back of my closet. I pulled it out to try the multiplayer last night. The online play actually put a little value into this for me. The performance was pretty solid with me barely dropping into the low 40FPS in multiplayer and usually in the 60-80 mark. More importantly, it was pretty fun. It's not "perfect" by any means, but still pretty enjoyable in terms of gameplay. The server browser blows chunks.. as I think Palooka said last night, it even makes the BF2 server browser look good and seem feature rich. But that aside, the gameplay is pretty darn fun. Repelling down and climbing ropes and swinging in through windows, taking cover and shooting from behind objects, using the GPS, and choosing your weapon and load out offers alot of different strategies. On one map, one of the players gave up the primary weapon in favor of a bullet proof shield. His only weapon being his Eagle Pistol. He made his way up to the helicopter and guarded it so the player who took the cache couldn't get to the checkpoint. Just another strategy you can try employing. You can choose assault, recon, sniper, etc load outs and then customize as you want.

    I'm still ticked at the performance in single player mode... but I'll have to give it another try and just turn off the FPS display on my PC to see if it's smooth without the mindset given by actually seeing the FPS.

    I still can't recommend this game as a 'must buy', but it was pretty fun playing last night. Not as fun as Company of Heroes though.
