Thanks, everyone! I don't mind being 30, but this is where I'd like it to stop.
For my birthday, I went shooting with my dad, girlfriend Terry, and girlfriend's daughter Marysa. We ran into an old guy with an M1 Garand and a Mauser K98 (with which all of you, having playing WWII games, should be familiar), and we got a crack at them. I learned that my dad is a better shot than I (he trained on the Garand back in the '60's), and that Terry is a gun nut. She was LOVING it. She was also pretty accurate (at 200 yards) until her shoulder got tired from the beating (she fired about 15 8mm rounds--which she loaded, herself--with the K98). Marysa enjoyed my old .22 Winchester pump-action the most, but she was handy with my .45. I, on the other hand, will take the Garand.
Excellent choice! I suggest procuring one from non other than the United States Government:

Just went out shooting this weekend as well -- took the AR-15, the 1911, and the Nagant that my stepdad just bought. The 1911 is shaping up nicely ... had an aftermarket trigger dropped in and the trigger pull lowered to about 3 lbs.
