Trying to figure out which way is the best way to go as far as gaming systems go for the family:
PS3
Wii
Xbox
I wouldn't buy either one if Hylander paid me!!

Santa just brought me a Wii and a few games for it.
I wanted it because it's like board games are you can get some friends together and have great laughs and with the sports thing you can get a ton of people together to have a ball.
It's not a "serious" gaming machine but I just had some friends over and we laughed for hours for me that's what it's all about. It doesn't get much better!
The thing I like about the Wii is it's just a fun gaming machine. The focus isn't on how much gore and blood you can spew or how violently you can dominate the world. Shoot-em-ups are a ball, but it's kind of refreshing to play a game where the focus isn't on killing everything you see. The bowling game is a blast! Definitely get 2 controllers though. Boxing is hilarious with 2 players.

I pretty much agree... If you want to do some good FPS gaming, etc - get an XBOX 360. If you want to just game and have fun, you can't beat the Wii. I think since you said it's for the family that the Wii is your best bet.

Sticking with the XBox myself. One obvious reason was Halo3. But the selection of games was more varied for the XBox for my tastes. Not too mention the huge investment in "old" XBox games I have that I still love to play. "Need for Speed: Most Wanted" has been rekindled a bit lately for me. LOVE driving games
The Wii is however a blast to play and much more of a "social event" gaming console. The XBox is a dark room with a big gun kind of experience for the most part as there are alot of first person shooters to choose from
I do have several friends that have Wii's. When we have a night at their houses playing it, I don't feel the need to hit the treadmill that day.
And btw, Nuts you have a beautiful home.....Congrats.
If you have kids and enjoy entertaining friends and family then the I would recommend the Wii. It really is a great family gaming system.

If you were a zombie and I had to kill you, I'd feel sad.
I echo all of the stuff about the Wii, their down right fun and the games are much more focused on game play versus graphics or depth. But also keep in mind their still rather tough to find.
The 360 is just an awesome system overall. They have a lot more variety then just FPS as well. Including the best console driving game to date, Forza2. If any of your children dream of being a professional driver, I strongly recommend the 360, Forza (and probably Nascar 07 though it's extremely hard), and the FF Wheel. The other side of the 360 is XBox Live which is just a great network and tool. Lots of fresh content is released for old games for download, you can network with Friends, play head to head or in mass groups in most games, and download lots of demos/arcade games/movies/etc..
Good luck and Enjoy!
Edit: I voted for the Wii since you stated your primary focus was fun with the family.
Edit 2: Based on many long winded threads, I might head warning to Hylander and say try the pc for racing simulators as well.

I haven't had a chance to try it out, as I don't have a 360 or any console for that matter. One of these days...it's just not high on the "I want" list at the moment.
I dusted off the ol G25 over Christmas and ran some laps in GTR2. Man am I rusty. The CXC is on my new "I gotta have that" list.

The base price starts at $20K - which is a nice down payment on a good Vintage Racer. I mean, it won't get me this:
But it's about half to get me into something like this:
